THIS YEARS PROMISING SARATOGA SPECIAL. Ever since its establishment in 1900 the Saratoga Special has excited lively emulation on the part of owners and bus annually been contested by the star two-vear-olds. In value it has ranged from Aristocracys 1,500 iu 1903 clown to Waldos ,875 last year. This year it will net the winner 7,500 if each subscription is represented in the running of the race. A subscription is for three horses, of which but one can start. Each subscription costs 00. half forfeit, and an owner can take as many subscriptions as he chooses. It is an old-fashioned aportiaa sweepstakes on the basis of "winner take all." there being nothing for the horses finishing behind the winner. Of the demonstrated good two-year-olds of the present year Whist. Colston. Meridian. Housemaid. Iron Mask. Gauntlet. Novelty. Zeus, Pluvious, Helene, Governor Gray and Naushon are in the Special and would suffice for a cracking good race. But for one reason and another the dark division is unusually strong this year awl retxirt has it that some real cracks that have not raced are in reserve for the Bpeaal and other rich Saratoga Stakes. John San-ford lias a subscription which covers two sons of Chuctaiuinda and one of Caughnawaga. Of the trio Van Bu. by Cliuctanunda — Molly Brant, is supiiosed to be the star, but the fact is that little is known as to the real merits of the Amsterdam turfmans representatives. August Belmonts Flint Rock, by Rock Sand, is sappoaed to have been saved for Saratoga, aad James R. Keenes Ruunymede. Black Friar, Spin and Sweepaway are in the same category. John Madden has two subscriptions, and among his nominations are The Spy II. and Goldbeater. The latter is the Adam — Roman Gold colt, which brought the top price among the yearlings sold at auction last year. He was sold to the Canadian turfman. John Dyment, for ,000 and bought from him by Madden at an advance. H. P. Whitney has three in his subscription well enough bred to do anything in racing. Of these the filly Matinee is a sister to Whisk Broom, which lias raced so well in England for Mr. Whitney. It. T. Wilson, Jr.s Abound is another that has not started about which flattering reports have been current. Altogether there are fascinating possibilities bound up in the running of the next Special, and if it should fall to Molly Brants son there would be great jubilation up and down the Mohawk valley. The conditions of the race ami the nominations are as follows: The Saratoga Special, ,000 added. For two-year-olds. Bv subscription of 00 each, half forfeit; with 92,300 and a piece of gold plate of the value of ,500 added.
