GREAT SALE OF YEARLINGS IN ENGLAND. Annual Auction at Doncaster Brings Fairly Good Returns to English Breeders. The sales of yearlings from the great breeding studs of England while the four days of the Don-caster September meeting are in progress, are hardly neeood in importance to the racing itself and sensational prices are sometimes realized for an extra line appearing yearling or two. Nothing of the kind marked this years sales, the highest price being 2,800 for a til 1 v by St. Frnsqitin — I.ady Kate and tin- second best .1, mm for the American-bred colt by Adam — Marechal Neil, Lord Lonsdale being the purchaser of both, The dam of the latter, being a sister to Orbys dam. Rhoda B., was neat over to England in the hope tiiat she could be sold for a high price because of the fame accruing to Rhoda R. through tie success of her son, Orhy, and her daughter. Khodora. but this f I pel la I Ion, was not fully realized. She was linally sold to Captain Nor I hey Hopkins for . KM. She was in foal to Adam at the lime and her new owner promptly insured her for . BOO. She died from the effects of foaling the Adam colt and the . .VII of insurance money and 1,000 for the colt made the transact ion decidedly a profitable one for apt. Nor they Hopkins. The average prices of this year were loss than in any of the three preceding years and there is an undercurrent of disappointment over results. Rut an average id ,722.50 for 271 colts anil tillies does not appear a bad one in view of the fact that at present there is an approximal ion to hard times bothering the wealthy in England. Th miparative figures id the Horn-aster sales for the last four years are as follows: Year. No. sold. Aggregate.
