TOMMIE THOMPSON A WINNER. Peep oDay Colt Beats Favorite in Two-Year-Old Race at Moncrief Park. Jacksonville, Via., January 9. There was a decided improvement in racing conditions at Moncrief Park today. The track was well-nigh fast, except in tho last sixteenth, which had been covered with a top dressing of sand. The program was framed to suit horses that fancy going a considerable distance, the distances in four of the six races being at one mile or over. The two feature races, a .selling handicap at one mile and a race for two-year-olds. lxth furnished stirring contests, in which the winners were first home by small margins. A big band of two-year-olds went to the post in the first race, the field numbering sixteen. Silas Grunip was made the choice and Jie showed a good IMTformance. He was only beaten by Tommie Thompson after a stirring stretch drive. The latter ran greenly in his first effort, but in todays race he showed good speed and gamely stood a long, hard drive. He broke from an outside position and But-well took him to the inside directly after the start, causing several of the other to pull up. The judges had Dutwell in the stand after the race and for a time it looked as if Tommie Thompson might be disqualified. Star .Tasauiine, which ran in the colors of T. C. McDowell, also ran a good race. She closed in a resolute manor in the homestretch and at the finish was going fastest of the lot. After Third Rail won the sixth race Guy Gray boosted him to and secured him at that figure. Third Rail was entered to be sold for .00. There was a meeting of the stewards this morning, when several cases were taken up. George Land was extftierated from blame for the inconsistent running of All Red. and the ban against the horses owned by R. J. Martin was lifted. The latter has engaged Frank Gehring to do ids training. Ainerieanoor ran ill the name and colors of J. R. Thompson this afternoon. The latter purchased the colt of W. Gerst this morning for 00. Among todays arrivals was Catosby Woodford, who came from Lexington. He will remain for a couple of days and then go to. .Green Cove Springs as the guest of Col. Dob Holloway. O. L. Richards arrived from New York, while E. R. Bradley and Mose Kostner came from Chicago. Dave Woodford, trainer of the Rovenvyck Stable, was taken sick yesterday with stomach, trouble and was removed to one of the local sanitariums. Frank Regan will handle the Beverwyck Stable horses dxir-ing Mr. Woodfords-Illness: - -- Capt. W. F. Presgrave and Thomas Clyde arrived here this afternoon in the Interests of the spring mooting at Pinilico. The meeting will likely commence April 22 and continue for the usual thirteen days. Marlboro will have a meeting preceding that at Pimlico. W. P. Austin bought the three-year-old Antenor today for ,300 from Guy Gray: Eyebright, owned by E. Trotter, dropped dead this morning from heart failure. This horse was being slowly prepared for engagements in some of the stakes later on.
