REDUCES MONCRIEF RECORD T. M. GREEN RUNS MILE IN 1:38 IN WINNING JACKSONVILLE RACE. James Rowos Lahore Qualifies for the Derby in Impressive Fashion Tommio Thompson Equals Track Mark in Taking Juvenile Sash. J Jacksonville, Fla., January 21. One of the best programs of the season was provided at Moncricf Lark this afternoon and with racing conditions almost perfect, a tremendous crowd turned out to witness the sport. High-class fields went to the post in a majority of the races and record-breaking performances were in order. T. M. Green beat a shiftv lot in the mile allowance race and incidentally established a new mark for Moucrief lark by circling the course in 1:3S2, which reduced the old record by two-fifths of a second. T. M. Green carried 107 pounds, made all of his own pace and beat Descomnets out a length. In the feature race, the Magnolia Stakes, a handicap at seven-eighths, for three-year-olds and upward, James Howes American Derby candidate, Lahore, beat one of the best bands that have gone to the post here this winter, winning by three-quarters of a length from Jack Parker in 1:205. Lahore carried 104 pounds to Barleythorpes 110, overcame much interference and won like a really good colt. The start was made on the turn and directly after the break in the scramble for positions, Lahore was caught in a jam and jockey Burns was forced to pull up. On the backstretch, Lahore was a distant trailer and appeared hopelessly out of it. Burns used good judgment in permitting him to get settled in his stride before making his rnn. At the turn out of the backstretch he steered Lahore to the outside and, rounding the far turn, closed on the leaders with a rush. Entering the homestretch he was on the extreme outside and was carried wide, but when straightened out he went after Barley-tliorpo and caught and passed him at the furlong post. After disposing of the latter, another con tender loomed up in Jack Parker, which made a determined . effort, but was unable to pass the Howe colt. Barleythorpe was a tiring third two lengths back and a nose in advance of-Mary Davis. A meeting between Lahore and Aldrian would do much toward indicating the probable winner of the American Derby, to be run here on the last day of the meeting. Tommle Thompson, the Peep oDay colt that J. W. May is handling for L. P. Doerhofer, scored another victory when he beat a band of twelve youngsters In the first race. The two-year-olds were asked to go three furlongs this afternoon and Tommie Thompson led all the way and won easily by a couple of lengths in 35e. equaling the track record. In the second race. Turncoat, running in the colors of M. Goldblatt and well backed by his connections, dropped dead at the turn into the homestretch. Dantield, winner of the fifth race, was boosted Sf.05 over his entered price by his former trainer, Frank Frisbie. but was protected and bought in by the Baverwyck Stable. There were many new arrivals today, among them Ching Hare, a well-known Toronto bookmaker: Thomas Crooks of Hamilton. Ont.: Phil Hyrnes of New York; Dan OLeary of Chicago, and Cal Milam of Lexington, Ky. The latter is on his way to St. Petersburg with Mrs. Milam, where he will spend " several weeks fishing for tarpon. G. Lydecker came from Maryland with Footpad. While being galloped this morning. First Peep grabbed one of her quarters and almost tore it off. The Sierra Nevada Stable has bought Heart Pang of J. R. Marquette, Jr. While being warmed up for the third race, the Schorr colt. Aylraer, went lamo and was excused by the judges. This necessitated bets being declared off and twenty minutes allowed for new booking. Because of the fact that Marlboro, Md., was not mentioned when the Jockey Club announced dates for the meetings at Norfolk, Va., and Pimlico, rumors have been afloat to the effect that the Jockey Club had not taken klndlv to the last meeting at Marlboro and that tlioy might not sanction the proposed meeting tills spring. Arthur EIrod, who is the manager of this plant, gave the reason yesterday why no dates had been allotted to Marlboro when he stated that he had not filed his application as yet and would not do so until the stewards of the Jockey Club hold their next meeting, in February. Mr. Elrod lias held back because he wanted to see just how much progress the workmen had made in constructing the new mile track and grandstand. Mr. EIrod believes that everything will be In readiness for the meeting to follow that, at Pimlico and will ask for dates accordingly. liohcrt Levy, promoter of the Jamestown meeting, announces that a number of stakes will be decided during the meeting. Among the recent arrivals at Moncrief is John Hare from Toronto. Ont., who is interested in Duf-ferin Park. lie says that his club will give two meetings this season and that the purses will be Increased to 5-100 as compared with 00 last season.
