TAMPA PURSES TO BE REDUCED. Tampa, Fla.. January 21. Rough riding in most of the races today contributed to mar the sport. Octopus, winner of the hurdle race, was aided to his success by the interference to which ho subjected Cull on the first turn. Beginning Monday, the purses will be 50 pending readjustment of affairs in the betting ring, according to a notice posted for the information of the horsemen this afternoon. It is said that the ring is a big loser and that Smith. Colby and Jones are dissatisfied with their bargain. It is generally believed that the firm will continue business, however. The attendance today was of goodly proportions and speculation was fairly brisk. The success of most of the favorites again entailed losses to the bookmakers.
