RACE AROUSES SUSPICION DASH AT MONCRIEF WON BY ABRASION FOLLOWED BY JOCKEYS SUSPENSION. Circumstances Surrounding Extraordinary Support for Winner to Be Judicially Investigated Sudden Drop in Temperature. Jacksonville, Ila.. January 23. The running of the fifth race at Moncrief Park this afternoon, in which Abrasion proved an easy winner, caused more comment than any race run here this winter and incidentally it may develop a scandal. The race in question was a seven-eighths dash, in which a Held of seven went to the post. On public form thj race looked like a three-horse affair. Glucose, Stafford and Ben Double being regarded as much the best. Unexpected support developed for Abrasion. Some venturesome layers chalked up C to 1 and there was such a rush to get aboard that the price was quickly cut to 3 and then to 2 to 1. The money continued to pour in until at post time" Abrasion was a 0 to 5 favorite. The antc-iost betting looked so suspicious that the judges called jockeys Obert and Loftus into the stand on their way to the post and warned them. When the start came Oberon and Judge Walton were first to show, Obroi leading by a length entering the backstretch, wJtli Judge Walton half a length in advance of Abrasiiu. In the run down tho backstretch Abrasion found i convenient opening between the two leaders and McCahey, quick to take advantage of it, rushed Abrasion through and dashed into a long lead rounding the far turn. In the homestretch Abrasion: was .quitting, but had enough left to outlast Judge Walton by a length and a half. Judge Walton was second, the same distance in advance of lieu Double, the latter closing with a lwlated rush. Glucose was never prominent and neither was Stafford. Tho early prfce was exceedingly slow, the quarter lieing run in 25. At the close of the days racing there came a ruling from the judges which brought suspension for Obert and Lof tus, pending f urtlicr investigation. There was a decided drop in the temperature before tho horses were called to the post for the, c-iKMiing dash. Abrasion was "the only winning favorite. Among todays arrivals were J. Ilirsch of Cincinnati, Max Muller of Philadophia and M. Shcedy of New York. J. McLaimlUii,who, sejlti tho auction pools on the Kentucky, trucks, came from Lexington. J. J. Flannigan left for Tampa this morning with four two-year-olds, the proiwrty of Dan Lehau. The judges issued a ruling on Saturday imposing a two-weeks suspension and a line of 0 on Georgo Senn for his failure to prove charges which he had preferred against bookmaker N. Shapiro. Thomas C.
