RACE AROUSES SUSPICION DASH AT MONCRIEF WON BY ABRASION FOL-LOWED BY JOCKEYS SUSPENSION. Circumstances Surrounding Extraordinary Support for Winner to Be Judicially Investigated Sudden Drop in Temperature, Jacksonville, Fla.. January 23. The running ot the fifth race at Moncrief Park this afternoon, in which Abrasion proved an easy winner, caused more comment than any race run here this winter and incidentally it may develop a scandal. The race in question was a seven-eighths dash, in which a field of seven went to the post. On public form the race looked like a three-horse affair, Glucose, Stafford and Ben Double being regarded as much the best. Unexpected support developed for Abrasion. Some venturesome layers chalked up 6 to 1 and there was such a rush to get aboard that the prlca was quickly cut to 3 and then to 2 to 1. The money continued to pour In until at post time" Abrasion was a G to 5 favorite. The ante-post betting looked so suspicious that tlie judges called jockeys Obert and Loftus into the stand on their way to the post and warned them. When the start came Oberon and Judge Walton were first to show, Obiron leading by a length entering the backstretch, wJth Judge Walton half a length In advance of Abrasion. In the run down the backstretch Abrasion found u convenient opening between tlie two leaders and McGahoy, quick to take advantage of it, rushed Abrasion through and dashed into a long lead rounding the far turn. In the homestretch Abrasion was quittiug. but had enough left to outlast Judge Walton by a length and a half. Judge Walton was second, the same distance in advance1 of Beil Double, the latter closing with a lelated rush. Glu-coso was never prominent and neither was Stafford. The early pdee was exceedingly slow, the quarter being run in 25. At the close of the days racing there came a ruling from the judges which brought suspension for Obert and Loftus, pending further-Investigation. There was a decided drop in tlie temperature before the horses were called to the post for the c-iening dash. . Abrasion -was the only winning favorite. Among todays arrivals were J. Ilirsch of Cincinnati, Max Muller of Philmlophia and M. Sheedy of New York. J. McLaiffUi fvlot sejls tho auction pools on tlie Kentucky, trucks, came from Lexington. J. J. Flaunigan left for Tampa this morning with four two-year-olds, the property of Dan Lehan. The judges issued a ruling on Saturday imposing a two-weeks suspension and a line of 0 on George Senn for his failure to prove charges which he had preferred against bookmaker N. Shapiro. Thomas C.
