CHESTER KRUM FOOLS SMART SET. San Francisco, Cal., February1 8. Chester Krum, making ins first, appearance after -a letup due to the muddy track, surprised the smart set by winuiug the Claude Handicap at Oakland today. He was allowed to recede to 15 to 1, while the other four starters were all well supported. Chester Krum moved up rapidly from last place and finally drew away to win from Arasee and Fort Johnson. E. Moyne. owner of Chester Krum, also won the fifth race with Miss "Officious. Well-supported horses took the first three purses. Fine weather favored the racing and the track lias dried out considerably. Jockeys G. Archibald and C. II. Shilling were on the sick list today. There will hereafter be seven races daily for the benefit of horsemen, starting tomorrow. Secretary Treat made the positive unnouneeuicnt that the Oakland meeting will come to a close next Wednesday. The California Derby and the four stakes for two-year-olds have been declared off and the entrance money will be refunded.
