LAHORE TAKES MONCRIEF STAKE RACE. James Rowes American Derby Candidate Beats Dr. Duenncr in Driving Finish. Jacksonville. Fla., February 25. The Ponce dc Leon Handicap, for three-year-olds, one mile, carrying a value of ,500, was provided as the feature at Moncrief Park this afternoon. A field composed of the best racers of their age in training here went to the post, and the running of the stake gave racegoers somewhat of a line on the prospective winner of the American Derby, to be run on the closing day of the meeting. James Rowes Lahore, with Butwell in the saddle, proved the winner, beating Dr. Duenncr a head in a stirring stretch drive. Lahore, rated off the early pace, came from behind, but weakened after getting the leaders at the furlong post. Governor Gray, which finished fourth, showed an excellent performance. Ho closed a big gap and was beaten less than a length and a half for first money. Ursula Emma, Fond Heart. Lahore and Lady Irma scored as favorites. The third race went to Judge Walton, with jockey Andy Minder in the saddle. The race was a selling affair and Judge Walton was boosted from 1911.sh00 to ,000 by B. Thompson, but was protected and bough f in by his owner, W. H. Fizer. Third Bail, winner of the sixth race, was also boosted. He was run up 05 over his entered price by W. E. Suggs and was also protected and bought in for ,005. After the running of the stake race jockey T. Koerner complained that A. Walsh, who had the mount on Antcnor, repeatedly attempted to cut him off. Owner James Blute was called into the stand and he said that his instructions to jockey Walsh were to stay behind Pharaoh if the latter went to the front. Walsh, instead of doing this, dropped out of it and for disobeying instructions, he was told not to accept any more mounts during the meeting. J. W. Schorr left for Memphis last night, but will return to witness the runuing of the Derby, in which Star Charter will represent him. While being galloped this morning, that good three-year-old, The Xigger, narrowly escaped being killed. There were several work wagons on the course at the time and one of them pulled across the track in front of the colt. The Xigger collided with the work outfit and was injured to such an ex-lent that he was withdrawn from a race iu which his entry had been made for Monday. John Hachmeister was a visitor at Moncrief this afternoon. He is here in the interests of the stakes to be run at Latonia this spring. Mr. Haehineister is one of the-most -popular officials counccted -rrttli racing and has the respect of horsemen and public. Humming Bird" frank Tyler was among the layers who cut. in this afternoon.
