CALIFORNIA COLT TAKES JUAREZ FEATURE. El Paso, Tex., February 23. Bright skies and an attractive card did much toward increasing the attendance at Terrazas Park today, a goodly sized Saturday crowd being present. The feature race of the day served to introduce to local race-goers two crack three-year-olds from California In Pawhuska and Pluvious, both of which had raced creditably at Oakland. The race proved easy for the Gabriel crack, the longest-priced starter iu the race. He opened a commanding lead early and held it to the end. Followers of form suffered from the cliaiige in track conditions, only scoring in one race, and the looks, which have been losing considerably of late, had a chance to recoup. Thomas Tooliey, owner of .Melissa, arrived today and had the pleasure of witnessing the victory of ids good mare. I. S. Fountain arrived from Oakland and had the good fortune to back several winners. Jockey McGee incurred the displeasure of starter Cassidy to the extent of fifteen days on the ground as a result of disobedience at the barrier. G. M. Odoin will confiue his spring and early summer racing this season to Louisville and Latonia and at the conclusion of the winter meeting here will ship the six horses lie now lias at Juarez to Churchill Downs. These embrace Follie Levy, Upright, Ben Lasca, The Pippin, Maxims Pride and Texture, all winuers at Juarez save the latter, a two-year-old by i Meltoulau Pennyworth, that has started only twice. When he reaches Louisville lie will add Prince Gal and. Fireman to his string, J. C. Milam having these performers now under his care at Lexington. The only other horse Mr. Odom owns is Nimbus, which racer is in the east. This son f Star Shoot, Mr. Odom -will have hrought west in the first shipment of horses that comes from New York to Louisville or Latonia, though he does not anticipate racing him until late in the snmmer. Mr. Odom will be hack at Juarez again next winter. He likes the track and has had a prosperous season here. Lew Marion will leave Juarez in a day or two and after spending a few days iu Chicago, will proceed to-Kentucky, where he has several horses in sight to train aud get ready for the Louisville aud Latonia meetings. Jockey C. Ganz. wliom Mr. Marion has under contract, will remain here. J. C. Calm will nominate his three-year-old bay colt Mockler for the Latonia Derby, as lie thinks this son of Sain a promising proposition for a mile and a half race. Mr. Cahn bought Mockler from Barney Schreiber privately. Being undersized as a yearling, the Missouri breeder had. not nominated him for the Kentucky Derby. The colt has grown out and developed amazingly as .a three-year-old. and is now a nicely turned young horse with an abundance of speed and. to allappearauees, a stayer. The colt will be a starter in the Juarez Derby April 2. and. having never, won a stake, he will get into that race with a big pull iu the weights.
