LINCOLNSHIRE AND GRAND NATIONAL. The English flat racing season of 1911 opens at Lincoln Monday, March 20. Naturally, the horses meant for early campaigning have been In active training for some time past and, as the weather has been unusually favorable, many-are far advanced in condition. The great event of the Lincoln meeting is the Lincolnshire Handicap, a mile dash that will be run Tuesday. March 21. This Is "annually the first great race of the English season and is always the medium of brisk ante-post betting. When Specu lation over it opened Eudorus. a five:year-old, handicapped at 114 pounds, was a slight favorite, but for some time betting was of a.desultory character, Recently the St. Serf four-year-old. Helot, has bevn persistently backed and Tiarr-JecTrme- affirm favorite. The latest betting reports gave his price as S Jq 1. He is handicapped at 111 poundsand is. thepTOperty or It. S. Sievier. former owner; of -.the great mare, Sceptre. Helot is a fast colt and undoubtedly training encouragingly. Other horses Well backed to win the race and their latest quotations arc: Merculio, 110 pounds, 100 to 7; Chauteur, 101 pounds, 100 to !; Shampoo, 102 pounds, 100 to 0; Falaise II.. The last-named is an American-bred colt, by Dieudonne Jovita, that won several races in England last year and is quoted at 25 to 10. H. P. Whitney nominated Perseus and New Castle for the Lincolnshire, .but the first named lias been declared. New Castle is probably as well advanced In training as any horse in the race, and at 105 pounds has no slight chance of winning. Last vear he started in twelve races, of which ho won four, was second in live and thiol in two. The only time be was unplaced was when he finished fifth in the Houghton Handicap at the Newmarket Houghton meeting, which fell to the fast filly, Santa Fina, with 90 pounds up. New Castle, of the same age, carried 111. The Lincoln meeting occupies the first three days of the week. The Liverpool Spring meeting -tills the last three. The Grand National Steeplechase is the great feature here. It will be run Friday, March 24, and. will bo contested by the usual big field. For some reason no disposition to back anything heavily had manifested itself up to latest advices, but at 100 to 11 Jerry M., 170 pounds, was the favorite, with the French horse, Lntteur III., that won this race two vears ago. second choice at 100 to S. His weight is 171 pounds. He only carried 151 pounds, when he won from Judas, Canheeh and twenty-nine other jumpers in 1909.
