VALUABLE NEW RACE FOR VIENNA. The announcement of a new race, worth .000, for the summer program of the Vienna Jockey Club, is coupled with the statement that two-thirds of tlie amount is provided by the city, and that the event is of international character, open to the horses of all countries. This meeting is fortunate in that, besides the usual sources of revenue, it receives a share of the profits from the electric car traffic to Freudenau, where the course is situated. Last year 0and3.0Q0 passengers were carried to and from the races. The prosperous condition of the Austrian turf causes the London Sportsman to .regret that the pari-mutuel system, or totalizator, cannot be introduced into England, Tor its use would go far towards great relief in taxation, would have the effect of Immensely reducing owners expenses in the way of entrance fees, and largely increasing the value of stakes." The same view is held by Aristide Baltazzl. senior steward of the Austrian Jockey Club, who contends that the institution of the pari-mutuel would give racing and breeding in England a tremendous lift, and that in a short lime there would be stakes of value double and treble the amounts now obtaining. The machines would not Ik- under private management, but under the sole control of the Jockey Club. It would not necessarily iio awav with bookmakers, as they are still operat-in- in Austria, though there Is said to exist a tax of$"00 per race dav before they can be licensed.
