MADDEN CANDIDATE FOR EPSOM DERBY. Nay York. March 20. Adam Bede, a strapping three-year-old chestnut colt, by Adam Grace Gum-bcrts, owned by John E. -Madden, was shipped to England Saturday on board the steamship Minne-waska. of the Atlantic Transport Line, with a view io filling- his engagement in the Epsom Derby May 31. Adam Bede was the biggest of the Adam two-.vertr-olds that Thomas Welsh brought to the races last spring for the Newcastle Stable and at one time lie was supposed io be one of the best. But lie struck ono of his legs in his maiden- race at Gravesend and no effort was made to get him to the post again. Last summer at the Saratoga sale at which Bashti was knocked down to aii agent of Harry Payne Whitney for .0,000. Mr. Madden purchased Adam Bede for about ,000. He worked the colt a mile in 1:44 at Saratoga late in August and believes that Adam Bede is a first-class prospect. Recently the colt .has been In the care of Frank Taylor- at Gravesend. lie will go direct to Newmarket, whore lie will be trained by Joseph Cannon. The. master of Hamburg Place insured Adam Bede for 5,000 prior to his departure for England.
