ANOTHER TEST AT NORFOLK WARRANTS SERVED ON MANAGER LEVY AND LAYERS AT JAMESTOWN TRACK. Action Follows Indictments by Grand Jury Good Track Conditions Prevail and Racine 13 Attended by Some Disappointments. Xorfolk, Va., April 12. The high winds and bright sunshine of the past few days worked wonders with the going at the Xorfolk track and horses that prefer a fast course bad their first chance of the meeting this afternoon. The change in the footing resulted in several upsets and the layers had some breaks that helped to even up some of the heavy losses they have sustained here this spring. Conditions were not inviting for out-of-door sport, a raw wind that blew across Chesapeake Bay and swept into tho grandstand making top coats and wraps a necessity. At the conclusion of the days sort, warrants wore served on several of the layers and also on Manager Bob Levy. The cases will come up tomorrow and when they are settled it will mean an end to the annoyance to which some ot the reformers have subjected the racing folk here this spring. Hie afternoons arrests were the result of grand jury indictments for a further test of the Virginia statutes governing betting. The colors of Albert Simons were In the limelight during the afternoon. He furnished the winners in both of the two-year-old races in Monsieur X. and Doodle Dandy, colts which he leased from Harry Payne Whitney. Roscoe Troxler piloted both and each of them won only after a stirring stretcli drive. Jockey Merrill Bell, the capable apprentice nnder contract to Hugh Penny, who suffered what looked like a nasty fall in the sixth race yesterday, came back today none the worse for his mishap and rode two winners. King Avondale and Frank Pnrcell. The latter showed good speed today and won with sreat ease. Michael Angelo beat a shifty lot In the fourth race, leading all the way and beating G. M. Miller half a length in a driving finish. Earl LinnelT has arrived at Pimlieo with the" horses he raced at. California and Juarez last winter. Jockey Guy Garner is with him, E., G. Moyne, owner of that shifty racer, Chester Krum, Is also ready to take part in the Pimlieo meeting. In the first race this afternoon Orphanry unseated Estep in the post parade and galloped around the track twice before he was caught. Despite this, he showed a splendhl performance, being a keen factor all tho way. Cherokee Rose threw her stifle out directly after the start of the second race and was pulled up. My Gal was jumped on in her last race and one of her ankles has filled. She will be rested for racing at Pimlieo. Recent work-outs. Weather clear; track slow: Academist Five-eighths in 1:07. Working along easily. Appassionata Half mile in OG. Looks ready but does not seem to run well in mud. Aspirin Half mile in 54. Looks to be close to his best form. Baby Wolf Half mile in 55J. Xow at bis best. Bethlehem Mile in 1:52. Worked along In a nice way. Black Chief Three-eighths in .19. Shows plenty of speed in tho heavy going. Bodkin Three-quarters in 1:21. Was not urged to show much speed. Chief Hayes Five-eighths in 1:00. Readv to race. Clirton -Three-eighths in C9s. Shows plenty ot speed. Dress Parade II. Three-quarters in 1:24. Going along easily. G. if. Miller Half mile in 5.1. Handles himself in the mud nicely. Hoffman Half mile in 54. Seems lo lie at his esr. Horace E. Half mile in 55. Shows speed in. the heavy going. Idle Michael Three-quarters in 1:221. Has all bis speed and never looked better. Jack Baker Mile In 1:50. Does not improve. John A. Mnnro Three-eighths in 40. Speedy and eased up on the last eighth. Judge Monck Five-eighths in 1:00. At his best. KIttory Half mile in 50. Lady Irma Half mile in 5IU. Ready to race. Miss Otlieious Seven-eighths in 1:S7. Has been showing a few good work-outs. Moncreif Five-eighths in 1:03s. Xice work for him. Parlor Boy Throe-quarters in 1:2.1. Was nnder a pull throughout the work. Polly Lee Half milo in 50. Has a fair amount of speed in the mud. Sea Cliff Half mile in 57. Has speed and never looked better. Sylvestris Five-eighths in 1:00;. Was going along nicely and was eased up.
