FOREIGNERS IN THIS YEARS DERBY. There are elements of uncertainty connected with tiie forthcoming contest for the blue riband, not the least inqiortant of which is as to what may be the ultimate policv of Edmonil Blanc, who has no fewer than half a dozen engaged, namely. Zebro. Shetland, Courtisati. Favonio, Manzauares and Lord Burgoyne. It happens that we have no giants in the laud on this occasion, or. at least, none that we know of at present, and. perhaps, never was a more favorable opportunity for a successful French invasion. So far nothing but misfortune has attended his laudable and plucky efforts to take the great race, which, curiously enough, has been won once only bv 1i French horse. Gladiateur, to wit. and that was as long ago as 1855, when he not only won the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby and St. Leger, but also the Grand Prize of Paris, for all of which he was trained at Newmarket by the late Thomas Jennings. It may well be that the time has come to avenge the several vexatious defeats of Convenient, by Common, Vinicius. by Rock Sand, and Jardy, by Cicero, and presumably the attack will be made by Zehio or Lord Burgoyne. the one a bay colt by Ajax out of Poupce, and the other a bay colt by Persimmon out of Lady Burgoyne. Should fortune favor the tirst named the triumph will be French complete, but not so iu the instance of "his lordship." who, it is scarcely necessary here to say, is of purely English pedigree. These are, moreover, not the only straugers to be Considered, for in Iron Musk Joyner lias iu charge for II. P. Whitney a verv nice horse, by Disguise out of Royal Rose, bred by J. It. Keene, who may himself be represented by another eolt of promise in Runnymede. by Voter out of Running Stream winner or the Newmarket Julv Cup, and trained by Joseph Butters. Then again comes another Joseph into the calculations, for at Lordship House has but recently arrived Adam Rede, a great big good-looking chestnut colt by j i Adam out of Grace Gunibcrts, to be trained by Cannon, and his coming had been preceded by that of The Spy. br. e. by Disguise out of Semper Paratus,, purchased by L. Winans from his nominator, J. E. Madden. AH those four last-nientioned were bred on tiie far side of tin; Atlantic, and there seems therefore the probability of America being well represented in the great race at Epsom, which was won bv their countryman. Iroquois, for the late Pierre Lorillard in 1SS1. after a thrilling race with Peregrine. "Vigilant," in London Sportsman.
