" JOCKEYS WHOSE SKILL PLAYED PART IN KENTUCKY DERBYS OF THE PAST . - T Louisville, Ky., May 11. AVhile the winning horses, owners and trainers of the thirty-six Kentucky Derbys that have passed into history have Ijoen frequently discussed, the jockeys who piloted the victorious horses have been well-night forgotten. Lewis, a colored boy, rode the first winner, Ans-tides. At last accounts he was still about the race courses. In 1S70 R. Swim, now dead, rode the winner, Aagrant. AVilliam AValker, now trainer for Col. AA E. Applegate, piloted Baden Baden in 1S77. AValker developed Round the AVorld, favorite for the Derby of 1911. In 1S7S Carter rode Day Star. I-iter he drifted west. Lord Murphy, the winner in 1S79, was ridden by a Dutchman. Shauer. Afterward he became a trainer and is now abroad. George Lewis was up when Fonso won in 1SS0. James .McLaughlin, now a trainer of renown, was in the saddle when Hindoo won in 1SS1. He was one of the greatest riders the American turf has known. In 1SS2 a stable boy, Hurd, rode Apollo. He drifted away from racing long since. Leonatus was ridden to victorv in 1SS3 by AVilliam Donahue, who is still plying the vocation of a traiiier. He was a great jockey. Isaac Murphy, colored, now dead, was on Buchanan when that horse won in 1SS4. He also rode Rilev in 1S90 and Kingman, another Derby winner, in. 1891. He is the only jockey that ever rode three Kentuckv Derby winners. Murphy was one of the greatest riders ever developed in America. He was on Salvator when that horse ran a mile in 1:353, which record still stands. Henderson, in 1SS5, rode Joe Cotton. Trace of him has been lost. In 18S! Ben Ali was ridden by that famous California jockey. Patsv Duffy, now dead. In 18S7 Isaac Lewis won on Montrose. He is still around the race tracks. George Covington, now in Germany, won witli Macbeth II. Thomas Kiley, now a trainer, was on Spokane when he defeated Proctor Knott in 1SS9. In 1S92 Alonzo Clayton won with Azra. Clayton is prospering at Little Rock, Ark. Kunz. a rider from the northwest, won in 1S93 with Lookout. He is In Manitoba. Goodale won with Chant in 1S94. He was killed the same season when a horse went down with him at Churchill Downs. "Soup" Perkins won with Halma in 1S95. He is now a trainer. AVillie Simms won witli Ben Brush in 1S9G and he was astride Plaudit, the winner of 1S9S. Garner, known as Dan Honigs rider, won with Typhoon II. in 1S97. Fred Taral won with Manuel In 1S99. Taral has recently returned from abroad. Across the sea he became famous, as lie was hero, as a rider. He has a son who is a jockey. Boland won the race in 1900 on Lieutenant Gibson. In 1901 ami 1002 His Eminence and Allau-a-Dale were the winners and AAinklield rode these horses. He is now a star jockey in Russia. II. Booker won with Judge Ilimes in 1903. He is now an owner of race horses. In 1901 the winner, Ehvood. was ridden by Prior, whose fame as a jockey rests chielly upon this victory and a Burns Handicap success at Oakland on Dr. Lcggo. Agile, in 1905, was ridden by Jack Martin, who is now located in Canada. In 1900 Roseoe Troxler, a Louisville boy, won with Sir Iluon. He is a rider of merit and will be at the Downs this spring. Andy Minder rode Pink .Star in 1907. Ho is still riding. Pickens was on Stone Street in 1908. In 1909 A. Powers rode AVintergreen. Powers is no longer riding in America on account of his increase in weight, but has joined the American colony of riders in Germany. The winner in 1910. Donau, was ridden by F. Herbert, who also is riding in Germany, having gone abroad this spring. AVho will be added to this notable roll of successful jockeys on Saturday?
