PRAETORIAN MAKES GOOD YOUNG RACER THAT HAD RUN DISAPPOINTINGLY WINS JUVENILE STAKES. .Grover Hughes Beats Good Ones in Overnight Handicap — Forehead Again Wins for J. B. Respess — Another Day of Close Finishes. Louisville, Ky., June 1. — J. N. Camdens Praetorian, of which much was expected earlier in the season, finally made good when lie scored a well-nioritcd success today iii the Juvenile Stakes, in Which sixteen oiing racers made up the field, "n-lihe in his farmer starts, he was away ill a forward position, remained elose lo the leaders during the lirst three furlongs and. under keen mglng, pit tip in the tinal striiles to heal alisse. The latter ■hewed her usual early spe d. lmt weakened perceptibly near the elose. although she held second ■lace seeure over Alainitos. which, coupled with Ouaranola. instituted the Henderson and Began entry. The hfat hand of starters made crowding in the race unavoidable and most Of those that tried conclusions were unable to show to their best form on account of frequent interference. Azyiadc. the favorite, was on the extreme outside and her early efforts to net into a contending posilion after going around the others from a slow beginning caused hello tire finally. Presumption was another that would have l» en a prominent factor with an equal break in the racing luck. The gram value of the stake was 11,600, of which ,170 was the winners net |m ri ion. lose finishes wire again the rule this afternoon and the interesting sport was immensely enjoyed by a big attendance. The even calibre of some of the starters in the different races caused a big volume of, speculation, the operators in all the nnituel machines being kept at top speed to handle the wagers. The handicap at six furlongs, which brought out some shifty sprinters, including Melisando and Kings Daughter, furnished an upset by the victory of Urerer Hughes over Kthel 1., starting for the tirst time this season, with Kings Daughter .1 n -1 outlasting Mellsande for third money. Melisande. becaate of her splendid performance in the Ixuiis-ville Handicap last .Saturday, when she was beaten , liy Ocean Round, was deemed to hold her opposition safe and was made a strong favorite near post time. but Qeoae made the mistake of trying to place her hiring the early part and the move proved fatal for she is essentially a front runner and could not reaaoad to urging in the stretch. Ethel I, showed high early speed, but the more lightly weighted Graver Hughes found but little trouble in drawing a nay from her in the tinal furlong. Hugh McCarren won his first purse of the meeting when Camel, the mainstay of bis stable, got home after a furious drive to dispose of Had News. The latter was in ■ running mood today and clung tenaciously to Camel during the stretch drive. EL K. Knapps Sprite, a newcomer hereabouts, made a show of those that started in the second lace and won with ease from Camellia and Madam Phelps. Peeping, owned by W. II. I.audeniann. was the supposed good tiling of the race, but whatever chance she may have bad went glimmering soon after the start, when .jockey Martin had to take back, be cause of Camellias action in cutting sharply across. J. It. Kespess. again scored when Forehead won the fifth race* with Oracle in second place and Pen Lasca third. Oracle met with much interference during the race or he might have given the winner a much stouter argument. If 1 on bead retains his present good form, he niav be a starter in the l~i-tonia Derby. » The closing race enabled trainer James Fitzsim-n ons to keep up bis good record begun earlier in the meeting, by adding another tirst to Ins list when Superstition, owned by W. 1.. Miupin. of Washington. D. .. beat a useliil lot of platers in game Style. Stone Street got the place in the tinal stride from Petrouiiis. the latter was best, lmt the weak ride he received from J. Class proved his undoing. Jockey B. Martin, who only recently attltd a ten-days suspension for rough riding, was suspended liy the starter for live days for disobedience at the |«|st. The Judges, after suspending jockey Roonej for five days for rough riding, rescinded their ruling on the boys plea that he would not again be an offender. The fortunate muttiel combination players received good returns for their investments this afternoon. The holders of tickets on Camel and Sprite got 21.00 for . while those having tickets on Grover Hughes. Forehead and Superstition received 42.2.1 for . J. W. Berry, who has charge of the horses owned liy Adolph Spreckcls. has changed his plans and will send the entire stable to Latonia instead of to Salt Lake, as formerly announced. Prior to the running of the fifth race J. 0. Keene Bid J. W. Parriah of Midway, Ky., became involved in an altercation and exchanged blows. Punish was somewhat the worse for the mixup. It is thought that the officials will take a hand in the affair tomorrow. * Thomas W. Flynn announced today that he has secured the services of jockey T. Koerner to pilot Starry Night in the LatOCda Derby. Mud Sill will likely be bandied by It. Goose. Floral Day was withdrawn from the Juvenile Slakes because of her trainers inability to secure a competent rider for her. Pinkola and Boca Grande are going soundly in their training and are receiving a steady preparation with a view to being campaigned ai Latonia. II. B. Duryeas colors were seen for the first time this season on a Kentucky track and were carried by Belfast. The colt is being handled by J. Simon lioaly. who has Capt. K. 15. Cassatts horses in charge. Thomas F. Kyan sent to tin- post m the second race n llasby looking filly in Relle Hampton. Sbe ran greenly and will show improvement when she becomes accustomed to racing. The diminutive II. Skirvin carried off the riding honors with a pair of victories. Unlike his elder brother, who rode with mediocre success for a pertod and is at present serving in the Inited States arniv. this youngster gives every indication of becoming a useful rider with maturity. He is only fourteen years of age and weighs seventy one pounds. Among tlis mornings work-outs, track fast, were the following: Anion— Half mile in .14. Hen Double —Three-quarters in 1:22.
