GREATEST RACE OF THE WORLD FOR THREE-YEAR OLD FILLIES * -r- The American Epsom Derby candidates of this year were not fleet enough to figure in the first three when that great nee was decided last Wednesday, but there is one in the Epsom Oaks which, will lie decided this afternoon, that may make amends for Derby disappointments. This one is II. P. Whitney-grand filly. Bashti. He gave 880.000 for her last year expressly because of her engagement in the Oaks and she has had a long and steady preparation for the event, no accident or sickness interrupting her training for ;i day. Just as Novelty was certainly the best American two year old colt of last year, equally unmistakably was Bashti our best filly and there will be real disappointment felt on this side of the Atlantic if she fails to at least finish in the tirst three today. The Oaks is a year older in history than the Derby, having first been run in 1770. when It was won by Lord Derbys Herod filly. Bridget. Three of its winners were previously successful in the Derby. Sir Charles Banburys Eleanor in 1801, W. I. Alisons ever famous Blink Penny in is." and Chevalier Ginistrellis Sig-norinetta in 1808; while eleven Oaks winners were subsequently triumphant in the Doucaster St. Leger, this illustrious band being Queen of Trumps in 1835, Formosa in 1MB, Hannah iii 1871. Marie Stuart in 1S7:. Apology in 1N74. Jannetle in 1878, Seabreeze in 1888, Memoir in 1890. La Fleche. in 1.892. Sceptre in 1802 and Pretty Polly in 1004. One moid American filly. Cap and Bells, was t ;iktii over to England after a successful campaign as a two-year-old in this country and won the Oaks in 1901, a precedent in favor of BashtL Xo other American-bred filly shares with Cap and Bells the distinction of having won the Epsom Oaks, but after today one may. Fnlike the Derby, the Oaks is not the medium of ante ix.st betting and. outside of the precedent of the One Thousand Guineas, there is little in a public way to indicate the favor Ite in advance of the event. AtneahS good race in the One Thousand will probably establish her in that pesiiion. The record of the race of races for three-yea i old fillies since 1850 is as follows: Sear. Owner. Winner. Odds.
