LEAMENCE WINS HANDICAP BEATS COUNTLESS IN OVERNIGHT FEATURE OF LATONIA CARD. Rider of Latter Horse Defers His Final Movo Too Long to Overcome Victors Lead — Colston Victor in a Close Finish. Cincinnati. O.. June 1.1. — Delightful weather and the pros|»ects of witnessing good sport contributed to attracting another banner crowd to the Latonia track today. Keen raciug, in most instances terminating in close finishes after stirring stretch, struggles, was their reward. The betting was again sharp and more voluminous than expected after yesterdays disastrous experience by the big plungers. The public began proceedings this afternoon auspiciously, but later on their choices failed in exasperating fashion by narrow margins. The principal disappointment came with the running of the handicap, at a mile and seventy yards, participated in by a sextet of good horses, and in which Fauntleroy. Countless. Ozana and Carlton G. absorbed nearly all the speculative attention in the order named. Leamence. a dispised outsider, ran a sparkling race and took the purse after a long drive with Countless. The last named was probably best, but Kennedy indulged him too long and, though. gaining rapidly near the end. he failed to overhaul Leamence, which had stolen a winning lead on the stretch turn. Polls ran in a manner which probably forecasts his return to good form. He finished with a rush and took third money. The race preceding the handicap furnished a thrilling finish between Colston. Hazel Burke and Bettie Sue. Colston was excellently handled by J. Conley. Under a better-judged ride Hazel Burke would have beaten the winner handily. Jockey Mass distinguished himself in the closiug dash by taking a desperate chance to squeeze through a small opening in the last seventy yauh; and his daring enabled John Louis to beat Fort Johnson. John W. Schorrs Rayerin scored a fluky victory in the third race, for, had Golden Agnes not bolted in the last sixteenth, the McManus filly would have won easily. The Hague, favorite in this race, failed to land in the money because she was effectively blocked by tin- tiring Redlass during the final furlong. Mack R. Eubanks graduated from the maiden lass with an impressive victory in the opening race. Booby, in the second race, enabled E. It. Bradley to win his tir t purse in a long time. All the purses this afternoon went to horses owned or controlled by horsemen from nearby points. Capt. J. T. Williams made arrangements tonight to transfer the Latonia Derby winner. Governor Gray, to Hamilton, Out., to start in the Derby which will he decided there on Saturday next. After hi** his start in the Hamilton fixture, he will be returned here to fill several late engagements beforo being transferred to Fort Erie, where he will be a starter in the Canadian Derby. Jockey T. Rice has been engaged to pilot Governor Gray. Jamea S. Everinan. his trainer, will go with the colt and return with him immediately after filling the Hamilton engagement. Captain Williams Ibis afternoon took occasion to deny the rumor that he had been made a big offer for the son of Garry Herrmann and Salama. "I have not had an offer for him and do not know of anyone anxious to buy him. I hardly think Mrs. Williams would care to sell and as she has given me full control of the horse. I say advisedly that no offer for the present would tempt me to sell the COlt," was his comment. Jockey Taplin was fined $." 0 by the judges for striking jockey Glass with his whip during the stretch drive in the fifth race. Harry Breivogel. the chief accountant here, is reported in bad condition. He is threatened with typhoid fever. General Manager John Haehuaeistor is also under the weather. Dr. Leach, the paddock and patrol judge, was again forced to absent himself from dutv today because of illness. E. W. Hefner has changed his plans for turning out Guv Fisher and is giving him light training. Karrick arrived today from Louisville with the remainder of the Knapp-Hitchcock-Wldener horses. There were nineteen in the consignment. Henderson and Began acquired Camellia this morning for the reported price of ,000. King Solomon pulled up lame after the finish of the last race. He might have won but for the mishap, which took place a sixteenth out when lie was in a commanding; lead. T. W. Ilyiin will ship his string to Chicago to encage in the two days meeting at Hawthorne. Henry McDaniel stated today that Anion is goinff along satisfactorily in his training and that he may In- a starter during the latter part of the meeting. John T.
