LATONIA CONDITIONS WORSE FAVORITES AGAIN FAIL TO CUT MUCH FIGURE IN THE RESULTS. Worst Track of the Season Finds Merrick the Only Successful Public Choice— Listless Riding Charged Up to Several Jockeys. Cincinnati, O.. June 27.— Track conditions at Latonia this afternoon were worse than at any tluia since the opening of the meeting and were responsible for the failures of many of the better class of horses contesting in the various races. Belling conditions governed in five of the races, while tlie sixth was given over to maiden two year-old fillies. Considering the bad track, the ordinary card and the threatening state of the weather during the early part of the afternoon, the attendance was accounted exceptionally good. Speculation was of larger proportiou than expected and the outcome was naturally unsatisfactory to the pnblic. Merrick was the only favorite that scored. Unsatisfactory riding again helped to mar the sport. Mountain, J. Mass and J. Wilson being the chief offenders. Moun tains listbss elioits 011 Marsand and Al Muller iii-ought him a caul ion from the judges. Glass should have won with Boarute in the fifth race in which ItcCahey, on Supple, outgeneraled Gla«s and Wilson. Tillies Nightmare, a sister to Wintergreen, tnak-ing her first star! in Kentucky, was served up as a good thing ami won impressively from Dorbie. Moun tain, who rode Oreen. the favorite, was caught nap ping at the start and his mount was nevur a contender. The second race resulted in victory for Hel-ene over Corinth and Marsand. The last-named was favorite, but under weak handling sprawled badly during the final furlong and succumbed to Corinth iu the last stride for second place. Colonel Cook, rnu-ning to his Jacksonville form and favored at the start, led for the entire distance In the third race and beat Alamitos, the favorite, to the finish. Mer-riek had little opposition in the fourth race and led Al Muller ami High Private for the entire running. High Privates showing in the race was only ordinary and. after the finish. Fred I.uzailer. acting" for J. R. Wainwright. claimed him for ,555. Stipples victory in the fifth was tluky and unexpected. The closing race resulted in a hard-fought final furlong duel between Kedwine and Tom Bigbee, the former winning in the last stride. Longhand, which was the medium for a coup in his previous start. tired unexpectedly in todays race and barely escaped losing third place. Jockey Gauz was fined 0 br the judges for cutting across the others on the first turn and interfering with Tom Bigbee. The suspensions of jockeys Rooney and T. Rice will explro tomorrow and they will resume riding. Horsemen were advised this afternoon that the Gittins bills were made a special order of busineee for tonights session in the New York Senate. All the eastern horsemen are confident of the success of the measures and are preparing for shipment to Saratoga at the close of the present meeting. Woodford Clay announced that he will not agala start Backhorn here, as the colt is extensively engaged in Saratoga stakes and he desires to keep him free from penalties. The nine yearlings owned by-Clay Bros, will be joined by the fourteen owned bv-E. F. Clay and sent to Saratoga to be sold. Most of them are by Star Shoot. Continuous use of the harrows and rollers will pat the track iu gimd condition overnight for tomorrows racing. John Hognn listed an additional hatch of hor»99 this morning for shipment to Hawthorne.
