. AMERICAN-BRED TWO-YEAR-OLDS DOING WELL IN ENGLAND So far as racing has progressed in England this year the best two-year-old of either sex introduced to the public is by common consent the lilly Lady Americus. She is unbeaten jind in the Coventry Slakes at Ascot simply ran away from Kenipion, Tonypandy. Javelin and Kunstars newly named brother. White Star. Lady Americus is half American, being a daughter of Americus. which in tbis country raced under the name of Bey del Caredes in the colors of "Lucky" Baldwin, by whom he was bred at Santa Anita, lie was himself a horse of amazing sliced, but a non-stayer and it is believed in England that a longer race than live furlongs will prove beyond the compass of Lady Americus. This, on the possibly mistaken theory, that in inheriting her sires great speed she has also inherited his inability to stay over longer than sprinting distances. Next to Lady Americus . the pick of the two-year-olds seems to be White Star, Lomond. Hall Cross, Javelin, Loin, Jaeger, Combination. Cbarmian, Jingling Geordie and the Ally by Spearmint Adula. Besides these, and by the record ranking with the best, are live American-bred stake winners in Sweeper II., Cataract. Kempion, Melody anil Mr. Peeper. Of the English-bred ones referred to White Star is a brother to this yearls Derby winner, Sunstar, and was bred by and belongs to Sunstars owner, J. B. Joel. As the Sundridge Doris colt he won the Woodeote Stakes at Epsom, ran unplaced in the Coventry Stakes at Ascot and then decidedly to the surprise of those most intimately concerned, won the July Stakes at Newmarket from Melody, Sweeper IL, Cataract, Verve, Monotone and live more. Lomond is a bay colt by Desmond Lowland Aggie, that, after being once unplaced and once third, won the rich Now Stakes at Ascot from Jingling Geordie, Green Cloth, Spearmint Adula lllly. Gay Laura, Verve and live more opponents In convincing style. He is the property of the Manchester owner. E. Huttou, and unquestionably a good one. Hall Cross belongs to II. Cholmondely and is a bay oc browu colt by Desmond Altesse that ran third to juintanona and Bullfinch for the Great Surrey Foal Stakes at Epsom and then won the British Dominion Plate at Sundown Park In a canter from Gallon and seven more opponents. Javelin is the Duke of Devonshires bay colt by Spearmint Full Cry which won the Exeter Stakes at Newmarket from Loin, Cylgad and two more after having been unplaced to Lady Americus in the Coventry Stakes. Loin is a French-bred bay colt by Gouver-nant Tempeto belonging to -Prince Lubomirekl that is trained hy J. Butters at Newmarket. He came out in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot with such an extraordinary private reputation that, he went to the post a 4 to 5 favorite, but was green and ran unplaced to Charniian, the Adam Wild Thyme lilly and Balhlair. His next start was for the Exeter Stakes and again he was favorite at to 5, but Javelin beat him by a head. Undismayed his backers made him favorite again in his next race. This was for the Soltykoff Stakes at Newmarket and he won easily from fifteen opponents. Loms trainer says he will win the Epsom Derby next year and he is probably a great youngster, hut slow in developing. L. Neumanns bay colt Jaeger, by Eager Mesange, rait third to Wrack and Le Touquet in the Sandown Park Produce Stakes at Sandown Park, second to Sweeper II. in the Fifty-ninth Triennial Stakes at Ascot and then won the Stud Produce Stakes at Newmarket from Limelight, Le Touquet and six more. Combination and Charniian are lillies. Combination, sister to the fine racer Land League, belongs to Baron G. Springer and is a bay by Desmond Combine. She was unplaced in her first race, ran third to Hornets Beauty and Sunningilale in her second and then won the valuable Seaton Delaval Plate at Newcastle from Corncob, Miss Elsie and five others. Her latest exploit was a victory in the Khedive Plate at Newmarket in which, among fifteen others, she defeated Mr. Belmonts fast filly Toggery. half-sister to Dick Welles. Cbarmian belongs to Lord Bosebery and is by his Derby winner Cicero Bosalba. She won the Norfolk Plate at Newmarket from Jingling Geordie and Balhlair and the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot from the Adam Wild Thyme lilly, Balhlair. Lorn and others and is admittedly in the first flight, a very fast young marc. Jingling Geordie is reckoned one of the best of the year, but on private reputation rather than on decisive public performances. lie is a chestnut colt by Santry Mcrangue and belongs to J. Buchanan. At the Epsom spring meeting lie defeated Clodius for the Caterham Plate and has several times been placed. His latest race was at Sandown Park July 15 in the National Breeders Produce Stakes for which he was beaten a half length by Major Eustace Loders Spearmint Adula filly. As the race is the most valuable English event for two-year-olds, his narrow defeat was a severe blow to his stable, especially since he was a pronounced favorite at 3 to 1. It was the Adula fillys first success and gains Spearmint a place in the list of winning stallions. Her dam. Adula, is a sister to the famous mare Pretty Polly. Good as the foregoing youngsters are, the five American-brcds named concede nothing to them. Indeed it is a question if Sweeper II. is not today the best colt in England and Cataract and Kenipion are not far behind him in demonstrated merit. Sweeper II. is a big chestnut colt by Broomstick Bavallo II. and consequently a half-brother to that capital race horse, Frank Gill, which ran so well over the New York tracks a few years back. He belongs to the former New York turfman. II. B. Duryea. His debut was in the Fifty-ninth Trienulal Stakes at Ascot and, ridden by J. Beid, he won from Jaeger. Corncob and seven more in such style as to win him general praise. His next start was for the July Stakes at the Newmarket First July meeting and here he was beaten when he would have won easily with a good rider up. He is an unruly colt, requiring a strong jockey, but for some reason a French rider named Muusse had the mount and, under his incompetent riding, the impetuous colt swerved across the wide track and finished a close third, but away off by himself and looking about for opposing company. The race was won by the Sundridge Doris colt by a head from the American lilly Melody. This week he won the valuable Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, but particulars of the race have not arrived. He is well engaged further along this year and is in the Two Thousand, Derby and St. Leger of next year. Kempion is another capital son of Broomstick that has distinguished himself in England. He is by Broomstick Flocarline and belongs to the English sportsman, T. Baring, who also owns the crack three-year-old, Mushroom, probably the best of his age in England, but unluckily not engaged in the "classic" races of the year. Flocarline is a marc that formerly raced well over Chicago tracks and had hopeful backing for the American Derby of her three-year-old year. Princess Callaway, which raced well in Kentucky this year is Kempions sister. The colts first start was in the Fitzwilliain Stakes at the Newmarket Craven meeting. Lord Boseberys Wrack was the favorite and J. It. Keenes Blarney Stone, a half-brother to Celt, was second choice, but Kenipion won gallantly, witli Wrack second and Blarney Stone third. In the May Plate at Newmarket lie lost his rider at the start and took no part in the race. His next race was for the Somerville Stakes at the Newmarket Second Spring meeting, which lie won by three lengths from Xesta, Blusterer and others. At Epsom he got off badly in the Woodeote Stakes and, having little chance, ran unplaced to the Smulridgc Doris colt. In the Coventry Stakes at Ascot he ran second to the flying Lady Americus, Tonypandy finishing third, Gallon. Javelin, Floran and the Sundridge Doris colt being in the unplaced division. Quite recently he won another stake race at Newmarket but his opposition was weak. Aside from his speed, dauntless gameness is one of Kempions characteristics, and be may rank high next year. He is nominated to the Two Thousand Guineas. Derby and St. Leger of 1012. James B. Keene has the swift three-year-old Run-nymede and a small band of promising two-year-olds in charge of trainer Joe Butters at Newmarket. Of these Cataract, Francoiii and Stmulium have won good races, but Cataract seems to be his best and is obviously a high-class colt." His first start was in the Wallington Plate at Epsom May .50, in which he rtm fourth to Wrack, Scion and Wolfs Ifope. The race was educational and of great benefit to the colt, as his next race proved. This was for the Fifty-fourth Biennial Stakes at Ascot, worth ,1S5 to the winner. The Erla Mor Bose of Jeddah colt was a good favorite, at 3 to 1. but Cataract was an easy winner, with Astra second and Apprentice third, ten others running unplaced. Cataract was at C to 1 in the betting. His next start was in the July Stakes at Newmarket, an untruly run race in which he was fourth to the Sundridge Doris colt. Melody and Sweeper II. His last race was probably his best. This was in the National Breeders Produce Stakes at Sandown Park July 15. for which nineteen highly tried two-year-olds started, Jingling Geordie, carrying 119 pounds, and ridden by Danny Mahor, was a heavily backed favorite at; 3 to 1, with Mr. Fairies Gay Laura second choice at 5 to 1. The Spearmint Adula filly, 11G pounds, and Mr. Vandcr-bilts Sightly were next in favor at 0 to 1. Cataract had to carry 131 pounds and, not being considered at the weights, was at 20 to 1. The Adula filly slipped away with an instant lead of two lengths and, making the running throughout, finally won by a half-length from Jingling Geordie, while Cataract was a bang-up third, despite his big impost. He is a bay colt by Ben Brush Running Stream, and so a half-brother to Runnymede. lie is not in the Two Thousand of next year, but is in the Derby, St. Leger and Grand Prix do Paris. Mr. Peeper has raced but twice, having won once and ran third once. Ho is a chestnut colt bv Meddler Admiration and belongs to IT. dc Courcey Forbes of New York. Ho won the first stake race of the year for two-year-olds, the Brockelsby Stakes at the Lincoln Spring meeting, showing great speed and defeating nineteen opponents in a way that at once gained him the credit of being a highly promising two-year-old. His defeat came in the Hyde Park Plate at the Epsom Spring meeting, for which he was the 11 to 10 favorite. His close relative, Melody, made her debut here and won all the way. the Ian Ore gelding finishing second by a head bettor than Mr. Peeper. However, the latter was not disgraced, carrying 131 pounds to 121 on Melody and 124 on the Ore gelding. iMclody is a chestnut lilly by Meddler Ballan-frae. and consequently a sister to the very fast filly Mediant of a few years back. She runs in the name of Charles Carroll, but is probably the property of her breeder, Clarence Mackay. Her success in her first race has been narrated. Her next race was for the Acorn Stakes at the Epsom Summer meeting. Although penalized she was an even-money favorite and an easy winner by a length, with Charniian second and the Spearmint Adula fillv third. She carried 127 pounds and ran the live furlongs straight of the race in fifty-seven seconds. Cbarmian had up 124 pounds, the Adula filly 121. Among the unplaced ones were King Georges Mad Meg, which was a good fourth. Mr. Whitneys Adam Wild Thyme lilly and .Mr. Keenes Matushka. In her other two races .Melody was third to Runnymede aud Prince San in the Forty-ninth New Biennial Stakes at Ascot and second to the Sundridge Doris eolt in the July Stakes at Newmarket. She is not in the One Thousand of next year, but holds engagements in the Epsom Oaks and the Coronation Stakes at Ascot.
