CLOSE CALL FOR RECORDS HORSES RUNNING IN FAST TIME OVER THE FORT ERIE TRACK JUST NOW. Lawton Wiggins Takes Measure of Speedy Sprinters in Overnight Handicap Stilly Night Runs Three-Quartcrs of a Mile in 1:12. Buffalo, N. Y., July 31. The rejuvenated Lawton Wiggins Showed a splendid performance in today feature race at Fort Erie, a six-furlongs handicap, in which he met some fast sprinters and won with ease after making all of his own pace. Lawton Wiggins, ridden by Sweeney, carried Sir John Johnson the lirst quarter in 22"; and then drew away into a comfortable lead, lwating the Hildreth entry, Shannon, "a length at tin: end and running the race iu 1:122. Sir John Johnson was making his maiden effort in Canada and was well supjtorted by his stable connections. He llattered them by racing head and head witli tlie winner until passing tht half-mile post, where he faltered and began to drop back. He was beaten ofT by Shannon at tlie end and after he pulled up it was found that he had gone lame during tlie racing. He was nodding on his way back to his stable, but how serious hi injury was trainer Dave Woodford could not say. Harry Payne Whitney furnished the winner of the race following tlie handicap iu Ills good-lookiug liliy Stilly Night, which also showed great speed. She made a show of her company and scored with much to spare in the fast time of 1:12. which was within one-ilfth of a second of the track record. The first three races were for two-year-olds, and Prince Chap and Elma, two of tlie winners, were outsiders In. the betting. The success of Island Queen iu the opening race profited the Kentucky delegation handsomely. Otto Fleischmann came up from New York to witness the sport. W. A. Porter came over from Mount Clemens and L. Allenberg was also among tua new arrivals. Frank G. Hogan. owner of tlie Idiebrook Stable, arrived from California and will remain for tho rest of the meeting. 0. "Johnson claimed Ben Lasca from George Odoin after lie horse was beaten on Saturday. Ganadore, one of the Pons two-year-olds, was excused from starting by the judges. The colt was taken with a slight attack of colic. Gnrneau, 0110 of W. O. Scullys racers, was also excused. Gar-neau developed fever this morning. Dave Woodford lias taken charge of Danfield and Tasteful, which were being handled by Willie Martin for the Beverwyck Stable. The stable of It. J. Mackenzie has arrived at Hamilton from Latonia to be rested up until thu opening of the Hamilton Jockey Clubs meeting. S. U. Hildreth lias secured a contract on jockev Kennedy for the Fort Erie and Hamilton meetings. Jockey M. Hell was taken with an attack of cramps after dismounting from Third Rail and canceled his remaining engagements. James Casey was among t lie arrivals from New York. It is his first visit here. He reports that Tom Welsh went abroad to purchase some yearlings, for Edwin Gould and that he will return to this country in the fall for the purpose of engaging some American help. Mr. Casey is looking around for a good rider to go abroad to ride for trainee Welsh. The steeplechaser. Aunt J hie, is expected here from Virginia to start iu the Grand Canadian Steeplechase to be run over the full course on Thursday. The weights for this stake were announced this afternoou. They are as follows: The Welkin, 101, Waterway. 150, Aunt Jule. 150, St. Voliua, 153. St. Abe, 14C. Trader, 142. Dr. Koch, 137, Sight, 133. Dr. Heard. 133. Judge Cronin, 130 and Corley, 130. Charles T. Patterson will train the horses of Robert Davies of Toronto. Captain Duhuine and detective Ed Shevlin of tho Pinkerton forces arrested two pickpockets at Fort Erie ou Saturday and the pair were given thirtv dava in the Wollund jail. They gave their names" as J. Weigass and Harry Cohen, and claimed to be from Hamilton. George Hendrie of the Windsor Fair Grounds and Driving Park Association, John H. Mudigan of the Niagara Racing Association and Col. William Hendrie, representing the Ontario Jockey Club, wen present at todays meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations committee. Judge Mouck of the Hamilton Jockey Club and Colin Campbell of tlie Montreal Jockey Club were absent, as was Joseph E. Seagram, who was unable to lie present ou account of sickness.
