FIREMAN TAKES HANDICAP EXTREMELY HEAVY GOING AT FORT ERIE TRACK SUITS GEORGE ODOMS HORSE. Outsider in Betting: Makes Runaway Affair of Principal Race of Ordinary Card Gossip from Canadian Circuit. Buffalo, N. Y., August 4. Tlie mud runners had another opportunity to show tlieir merit ut Fort Erie this afternoon, Tho going was stiffer than yesterday and it took a good hor.se to run well over it. Upsets were the order of the day and some of tho winners again came from the mast unexi meted quarters. The card was devoid of features, wliieh was to he expected for two reasons, one being that it was Friday and racing secretaries usually cater to the poorer class of horses on this day, and the other because owners of the better class of horses would not take a chance of running them in such going as prevailed this afternoon. The fluids in some of the races were evenly matched and stirring finishes were provided. In the opener, a live and a half furlongs sprint for two-year-olds, the first four horses passed the judges stand heads apart with Harney Schreibers Sadie Shapiro getting up in the closing strides to win by a head from .1. "V. Schorrs Terrible Boy. Ueorge Odom furnished the winner in tho handicap in Fireman, which made a runaway affair of the race. Firemans previous form was so discouraging that he was the extreme outsider in the betting. The heavy going evidently suited him, for he dashed to the front at the start and, after opening a commanding lead, won under restraint from Kdda. Emperor William was lirst of the afternoons favorites to score. lie was well backed in the lifth race and won with ease after leading all the way. The conditions called for all to be entered to be sold for 00, and Sam Hildreth loosted him 00. The horse was protected and Ixiuglit in by his owner. It marked the .first victory for Emperor William in a long while. Tlie horse went wrong at Norfolk .list spring, but is going apparently soundly again. Trainer Albright, who came on with the Sanford iiorses, was a visitor at the track this afternoon. He will leave for Amsterdam, N. Y., Sunday to take up the seventeen yearlings at the Ilurricana Stock Farm. There are also twenty-two weanlings at tho farm. It is the intention of .Messrs. Sanford to ship fifteen of their broodmares to the Lexington fall sales. Their broodmares have been increasing so rapidly that the Sanford establishment is overcrowded. It was for the latter reason more than anything else that Herkimer. Rockville and other of the Sanford horses were sold on Thursday. Jockey J. Glass was fined .5 by the judges for cutting across in front in the secoud race. Judge Nelson is determined to stop rough riding and Glass was warned that Ids next offense would result in suspension. John R. Walker, former trainer for Robert Davies of Toronto, was assaulted and robbed last night of 2,700. He was walking from the track to Rridge-hnrg when tlie assault occurred. Ho was beaten about tlie head, but was not seriously injured. Joseph Mcl.eimon, who is looking after entries for the stakes offered by the Ontario and .Montreal Jockey Clubs, reports that a numlor of the owners wlio are here from Kentucky have entered in the events to be run at Woodbine and Mug Bonnets. Among those who have made nominations are Woodford Clay. Henderson and Hogan, George M. Odom, Edward W. Heffner, "William Cahill, James Fitzsim-mons aud Wayne O. .Toplin. Tho horses in the stable of Joseph E. Seagram will be shipped to Hamilton tomorrow. Rockville, the three-year-old that was purchased for Mr. Seagram at the Sanford sale, crossed the border this morning and Trainer Barry Littlelield is pleased with the horse. Tlie horses purchased by other owners which were held in quarantine were released this morning. Thirty-live layers were in line this afternoon, a record number for Fort Erie. Among the new ones were Rod McMahon. Joe Cohen and Gene Austin. H. G. Bedwell wired jockey Taplin asking if he was in a position to go west and ride for him. Taplin was forced to refuse the engagement, as he is under contract to R. J. Mackenzie. Governor Gray was shipped back to Kentucky this morning to be rested for the fall meetings at Lexington, Louisville and Latonia. Charles Wilson, who brought a division of the Selueiber horses here from Missouri, will open a public stable. Wilson lias Immui training in the west for several seasons. lie developed jockey J. AVilson, who is now under contract to J. W. Schorr.
