NOTES OF THE TURF. John W. Gates, whose plunging proclivities brought him into prominence on American race tracks, died Liqsterday morning in Paris. Wk The Prix de Viller was won by H. B. Duryeas ihannon at Deauville in France yesterday. In the rix de Souvres W. K. Vanderbilts Marmora Hinished second and his Canadienne came in second "in the Prix de Hontleur. The condition of the course after a recent heavy rain leads the management of the new track at Alan, Idaho, to believe that it will never be heavy. An hour or so after the rain ceased, the surface of the track appeared dry. It is constructed with a Handy loam dressing over a gravel foundation.
