BIG HOLIDAY THRONG AT HAWTHORNE. Arrest of Prominent Labor Official May Load to Test of Illinois Law, Some 13,000 people witnessed ,the decision of yesterdays holiday card at Hawthorne track, when tha two-days meeting under the auspices of the Chicago Business Agents Association was brought to a successful close. Enthusiasm over the thoroughbred ran high. Sheriff Zimmers deputies were on hand as on the previous day to enforce the law against betting, and arrested Peter Shaughnessy, president of the Chicago Business Agents Association, which conducted the Hawthorne meeting, after the first race on a charge of betting with Tom McIIugh. 515 Thirty-ninth street, Chicago. The latter was also taken into custody. Shaughnessy pleaded with Chief Deputy Sheriff Peters to release him. but in vnln. He immediately arranged for the services of Walter A. Lantz as attorney and announced that he intended to fight io the bitter end. Other men arrested were, George Steers, 7143 Lafayette avenue, and F. 15, Storm, 102 West Seventy-second avenue, Chicago. All were taken to Riverside and a -thorough test of the Illinois law affecting betting may result. The racing was spirited and seemingly was hugely enjoyed by the big crowd in attendance. The horses that participated in it will be shipped back to Kentucky forthwith.
