NO RACING AT CHARLESTON i. F. J. PONS ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY ABANDONMENT OF PROPOSED VENTURE. Obstacles Turn Up That Promoter of Plan Will Not Attempt to Combat at Present Hope for Consummation of Plans Next Season. Cincinnati, 0.. September 7. Plans for racing at Charleston, S. C, this winter have been abandoned for this year at least, according to Francis J. Pons, the prime mover and backer of the enterprise. Sus-Iension of the project is due to many obstacles that cropped up recently and which the promoters did not care to combat at present. The decision to abandon the building plans came after several conferences among those promoting the venture. The idea of conducting racing at Charleston una not been entirely given up and it is altogether likely that next season will find conditions more favorable for the project and a consummation of the promoter plans. John Hachmeistcr, general manager of the Latonla Jockey Club, left tonight for Detroit, Mich., and will return to resume his duties here next week. Harry F. Breivogel is reported convalescing rapidly at his home in Detroit and probably will be iu condition to resume his duties as assistant to Manager Winn at the Juarez track before the opening of the winter meeting at that place on Thanksgiving Day.
