STRIKES AFFECT ENGLISH RACING. Ono Meeting Declared Off Sunstars Retirement Makes King William the St. Leger Favorite. London, Eng., August 20. Outside of the breaking down of the Derby winner, Sunstar, and his couse- quent deprivation of his obvious chance of joining the ultra select band of "Triple Crown" winners, nothing of great moment has recently occurred in the way of the turf. Great embarrassment was caused by the railway strike, owners, trainers, followers and patrons being panic stricken at the prospect of the abolishment of means of transportation to and from the various scheduled meetings. The Woolverharaptbn officials were In such dismay that they announced the postponement of their meeting, set for the early days of this week. Then the Jockey Club Intervened and informed them that they must either carry on their meeting on its authorized dates or abandon it altogether. The latter course was adopted. Xuckily the strike was declared off . in time to save the more important Stockton meeting from a similar predicament and very good racing has been witnessed there this week. Sunstars breakdown was of such an uncompromising character as to leave no ground for hope and the handsome son of Sundridge has already been definitely retired to the stud at Childwick. Here, next spring, at a fee of 300 guineas he will be-mated with a few outside mares besides some belonging to his owner, J. B. Joel, but In all ho will be limited to ten or twelve at most, it having been determined to take no chance of overtaxing such a young horse. King George and Lord Rosebery tic among the applicants for his services and it is sure their selected mares will be among the few admitted to Sunstars court. With him out of the way. King William has been made a firm favorite for the St. Leger at such a short price as 11 to S. Lycaon and Prince Palatine have been backed at longer odds, but the St. Leger market is a weak one and there is small inclination for ante-post betting over it, although its decision is not far away. Racing of an important character will come on at York next week and will be welcomed by those who are in attendance on the races, only when the real stars of the track are to be viewed in contention. Since such as Sfedfasr, King William, Pietri, Alice Lomond, Lady Americus, Cataract, Jaeger, Persephone, Pitmaston, Mirador, Pillo, Marajax, Dalmatian, Yellow Slave, norncts Beauty, Jingling Geordie, Maiden Erleigh, Cylgad, Hector and others of recognized high ciuss are among those booked to start in various races, good reason exists to attract the desirable class referred to. Lord Derby has slightly increased his advantage over J. B. Joel In the list of leading winning owners, and now that Sunstar has broken down will probably not be so closely approached again by the latter. Other owners who have made additions to their stable earnings are C. E. Howard, Mr. Fairie, Lord Durham, G. Edwardes and Sol Joel, the list of winners of 5,000 or more being now as follows: Wing Races Amount Owner. Horses. Won. Won. Lord Derby C 15 2S,270 J. B. Joel 12 22 122.520 C. E. With many stakes to be decided at these meetings, important additions cannot well fall to be placed to the credit of the stars of the day.
