KEEN INTEREST IN ENDURANCE STAKES. Louisville, Ky., September 1C. The running of the Kentucky Endurance Stakes, at four miles, over the Churchill Downs course on October 7. worth to the winner 70 per cent, of S,400 in addition to a sold cup donated by the Kentucky State Racing Commission, is attracting international interest. Col. M. J. Winn, general manager of the Louisville Racing Association, predicts that, aside from the fact that the event is the richest turf feature of 1011, it will be tho most spectacular struggle witnessed between thoroughbreds in many years. This event will revive long distance racing, so popular iu tho long ago. It is expected to demonstrate that the thoroughbred of the present day possesses that miality of endurance which rendered famous such performers as Boston, Springbok. Prcakncss, Blnga-raan, B. F. Carver, Willie I.. Glenmore, Judge Denny, Marplot, Ten Broeek, Mollie McCarthy, Black Mariav Grey Eagle, Wagner, Fashion, Timoleon, Ucnlity and others of renown. The two horses last named were the earliest of Sir Archys distinguished get and the greatest horses iu America descended from Sir Archy. Not merely the financial consideration, but the honor and glory accompanying victory in tho race, is actuating the foremost turfmen of the country to strive for the Kentucky Endurance Stakes prize. Enrolled as contenders will be horses owned by August Belmont, Johnson N. Camden, E. B. Cassatt, John Dyment, J. W. Schorr, Thomas Monohan, George M. Odom, Henderson and Hogan, R. F. Carman, H. Guy Bedweli. W. O. Joplin. J. G. Greener, W. E. Nunn, R. N. Smith, S. C. Hildreth, Mrs. N. B. Davis, Mrs. Eugene Lutz and W. I. Weaver. Among the horses eligible to start are the following: Flint Rock, Nadzu, Fitz Herbert, Zeus, Montgomery, Countless. Bonnie Kelso, AVatcrvale, Trap Rock, Chester Kruin, Chorryola, John Furlong, Heatherbroom, Schoolmarm, AVaterlake, John Louis, Chief Kee, Exemplar. Messenger Boy, Governor Gray, Textile, Paton, Rockfield, Royal Report, Fireman, Nimbus, Markie M., Aylmcr and Star Charter. Students of form arc busy figuring upon tho outcome of- the race. A majority appear to like August Belmonts Flint Rock, tho strapping son of Rock Sand and winner of the Dominion Handicap. Nadzu, owned by Bedweli. the turfman from the far west, is another that is well favored. Nadzu is unquestionably a long distance performer of merit. It would, indeed, be remarkable if Nadzu, after leading to Mr. Bedwells enforced retirement from the turf by reason of alleged stimulants administered to the animal, should win for this recently reinstated owner the crowning turf prize of 1911. Endymion II., an importation from England, looms as a dangerous factor owing to his string of triumphs cm the Inter-mountain circuit. Then there is; Governor Gray. Cap. Jim Williams is always ready to wager heavily upon the chances of this game and ilect horse. He says ho is tho best racer lie ever sent to the post. Such stars as Countless, Bonnie Kolso, Textile, Cintrclla, Fireman, Heather-bloom, Royal Report, Meridian. Markie M., Messenger Boy, Fitz Herbert and Zeus cannot be overlooked. Tho race will not only serve to show up the greatest long-distance horse in America, but it will serve to test the ability of the leading trainers. Four-mile races have aroused in tills country greater interest and enthusiasm than horse races of any other distance. As far back as May 10, 1S42, the north and south engaged in a four-mile heat race, the most memorable in turf annals. It was for 0,000 a side, and attracted thousands of persons from- the remotest sections of the union. It was for months the theme of comment and speculation, not only in the sporting circles of this country, but in England.
