MR. WIDENER LEASES FRENCH" STUD. New York, September 20. Joseph E. Widcner, who a few seasons back invaded the French turf with a considerable stable of steeplechasers, has recently made an important addition to his foreign holdings. Ho has leased the establishment of Prince Murat at Chantilly and is now in possession of one of the most famous properties devoted to the thoroughbred In all France. The Prince Murat holdings are more elaborate than those of W. K. Vanderbllr. who for many seasons has been the most prominent American turfman racing in France. They are better than the palatial stables and paddocks of the Frank J. Gould French estates and all together it is the most important turf transfer of the year. In addition to securing a long lease on the property. Mr. Widener, by the terms of the lease, secures an option on the purchase from Prince Murat of the yearlings which he bought at Trouville and which are now In training at Chautilly. It was known when Mr. Widener secured the services of Thomas Welsh as trainer that he contemplated branching out on the French turf. He has met with a fair measure of success-with his steeplechasers, but his future plans contemplate a lively campaign on the fiat as well as through the field.
