KEENE COLORS SEEN AT LAUREL. Famous White, with Blue Spots, Carried in a Race for First Time This Season. Laurel. Mil., October 0. The colors of James R. Kecue were seen in public for the first time this sea son when the two-year-old Promised Land carried the white, with blue spots, in the second race at Laurel this afternoon. Promised Land raced poorly and was not a factor at any stage of the running. There are some good horses in the Keeue string here, however, and lieforc long they should give a good account of themselves. Racing at Laurel this afternoon was under pleasant conditions. There was a further decided improvement in the track and fast time was recorded. The attendance, too, showed a big increase over the previous days of the meeting, and the sport was keenly enjoyed. A majority of the finishes found the winners under hard drives and in two instances the result remained in uoubt until the final stride. Dr.. Duenner, Oaklmrst and Love Watches wore winning favorites. Dr. S. W. Streett. who has had his horses quartered at Bennlng since last fall, won with the first horse that he sent to the post this year. He saddled the Voter colt Candidate in the first race, a dash of three-quarters mile for maidens. Candidate showed a smart performance. He ran In close com panv with the favorite. Sam Bank, until straightened out in tbe homestretch, where he adually drew away to win by a length. Pliants victory in the second race came only after a stirring brush with the McDowell entry. Star Jasmine, in which she just managed to get up to win by a nose. Obert rode a strong finish on the winner and owner Francis J. Pons was on hand to witness her victory. There were sixteen starters iu the fifth race. This was the largest field that has gone to the post during the meeting. Rounding the far turn, there was a bit of crowding and Royal Onyx stumbled and wont down and Toniata tumbled over him. The results were not serious, fortunately. S. O. Hllilreth was a visitor this afternoon. He named Hampton Court aud Zeus in the Baltimore Handicap tomorrow and announced that one of the two would surely carry his colors in the race. W. F. Schulte, whose horses arrived from Louis ville last Saturday, was one of the now arrivals. He will remain for the rest of the meeting. A. B. Dade, who has been doing the starting here, left for Pimlieo after tho last race. His place will be taken by AVni. M. Murray, who has been doing the starting at Dufferin Park, Toronto. The jumps have been cut down. Several of the owners complained that they were too stiff and about a foot has been taken off each of them. Jockey McTaggart received a wire from AV. G. Ynnke this afternoon making him a flattering offer, which the lad probably will accept. Jockey Coburn arrived this morning. He will rido for II. G. Bedwell during the Laurel meeting. Co-burn will probably have the mount on Hilarious in the Baltimore Handicap tomorrow. The remainder ot the Bedwell shipment for Laurel Is expected to leave Louisville tomorrow night. J. AV. May has shipped his gtriug from Laurel to Pimlieo.
