NOTES OF THE TURF. H G. Bcdwell is planning a winter campaign at Juarez. James McCormick is expected to visit this country hexf. month. He has had a successful season training in Europe. Fifteen thousand persons saw the running of the Oklahoma Derby at Oklahoma City Thursday. Speculation was heavy, one book reporting a take of 510,000 on the days racing. Tv Ryan, of Toronto, has purchased the racing string Of J. W. Healey, including Charley Brown, Lady Hughes, Twenty-One and Clay. Mr. Healey wlll continue to train the horses. Republican was well backed by horsemen in the Sheepshead Bay colony when he recently scored at Laurel at long odds, on the strength of some fast trials, confirmed by a tip from J. J. Hyland, his owner aiid trainer. Tom Welsh, who recently went to France to train for Joseph E. Widener, has written a friend that he" will be back in New York for a visit during November. . He had intended coming earlier, but found it impossible to leave sooner. He . now has thirty picked edits, purchased at the French" yearling sales. Sheepshead Bay has been deserted by the horsemen. What few horsemen that had not previously gone to Maryland for the meeting at Laurel, left yesterday to be on. hand for the opening at Pimlico. Among others who made the trip are J. L. McGin- nls, Joe Notter, A. McDaniel, Julius Bauer, Con Leighton and E. Phelan. The J. E. Widener invitation races at Elkins Park, Va.-, Thursday, were marred by several mishaps. Tommy Wright was stunned by a fall, but not seriously Injured. Steeplechase jockey H. Roberts is in a bad way as this result of a fall. Meltonere, his m5unt, ran away after throwing him, dashed into tba spectators and injured two women seriously.
