MERIDIAN IN FINE FETTLE E. F. CARMANS KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER TAKES HANDICAP AT LATONIA. Track Still in Poor Condition and One Race is Declared Off Weights Announced for the Latonia Endurance Stakes. Cincinnati, 0., November S. Todays racing offering at Latonia, considering the poor track conditions, was excellent and attracted a large attendance. The weather was again bleak and threatening. Speculation picked up considerably over former days this week and backers- of favorites again suffered, as only one lirst choice. Meridian, rewarded them. The original second race was declared off and a dash at six furlongs substituted, with Font, Itoyal Captive, Anidret and Winning Widow as the contestants. Royal Captive and A more t were named in the original race, but both dodged the issue with Merrick. Winning Widow was supposed to have conditions to her order, and invited strong backing, but her supporters were a chagrined lot when she trailed the others home, the purse going to Font, with Royal Captive in second place. The talent began to get their jolts in the opener when Brig led home the odds-ou Hose of Jeddah. E. U. Bradley again neglected the opportunity for a good winning on his Ally. Meridian was much the best in the handicap and came away in fine style after trailing Grover Hughes under restraint to the stretch turn. Cherry-ola closed a tremendous gap to take second place and after the finish worked out to the mile and an eighth in preparation for her Latonia Endurance Stakes engagement next Saturday. In the fifth race Manager Mack proved a surprise, getting up in the last stride to nose out Froglegs oji the post. The Schorr colt was best, but Fains overconfidence cost him the purse. Kaiser, after showing good speed, weakened, but held True Blue safe for third place. John Reunion made partial amends for Froglegs defeat by getting a clo decision over G. M. Miller in the closing race, with Tay Pay third. The latter, as usual trailed far out of it until the stretch was reached, then came with a cyclonic rush. The Hyams-Joplin combination broke a long losing streak when Swarfs Hill showed the way home from a bad lot in the third race and just lasted to beat Nan Ferguson. Weights were announced today for the Latonia Endurance Stakes, to m run on Saturday next, and Secretary Maginns allotment to the different candidates generally meets with favor. Thirtv-seven are eligible to start, but the field will be likely made up of the following: High Private, 121; Meridian, 11C; Countless, 114; Governor Gray, 114; Cherryola, 111; Star Charter, 10S; John Furlong. 103; Stone Street. 105; Messenger Boy, 103; Azo. 102; Any Port, 101, and Mockler, 95. Winners after today will be penalized five pounds. Governor Gray worked an easy mile and a half between races this afternoon in 2:4:2s. Jockey J. Cook was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the starter. The report of a suspension against T. Kocrner was incorrect, the assistant starter making the mistake of reporting it to the clerk of the scales. The two-horse combination, consisting of Brig and Font, paid G3.40 for . The three-horse combination went to the field backers. Dr. Talbotts injuries are not as severe as at first expected, a broken nose being the most serious. Arrangements by Eugene Elrod and W. W. Lyles for special trains to New Orleans and Juarez are steadily going on, and both will carry big consignments. Eugene Elrod," in charge of the Juarez special, is daily in receipt of inquiries from horsemen at distant points who intend shipping on the special train that will leave for the Mexican track next Monday. F. H. McKinnie, of Pittsburgh, advises that he will ship six horses. A number of horses that raced at Laurel will also be sent here to board the special. The rate for carload is 70, making the charge for one horse 37. The passenger rate is 532.30, about 2 less than the regular rate. It has been decided to run three Pullman cars to accommodate the large number of persons who have decided to go on the train.
