SHOWS DEPLORABLE CONDITION ACCURATELY. With the sale of Fitz nerbert. Novelty and other stars of the thoroughbred turf to Charles Kohler for racing in England, and with the departure of S. C. Hildreth for foreign shores to train these horses which in happier times for racing in this state wero the backbone of his powerful stable, the fact is brought home that it will require something more than opening the gates of the tracks to restore the sport. Of the leading owners and breeders .in this country, August Belmont and R. T. Wilson are about the only ones who have shown no signs as yet of giving up hope. Mr. Belmont. It is true, races a small stable in England, but he did "so long before the passage of the Agnew-Uart law which brought racing to such an evil pass in this state. The loss to this country of horses of the class and quality of Fitz Herbert, Novelty and Ballot, among others, cannot be overestimated, and they are only three of the many which have been shipped away to enrich the stock of England. France, Germany, or some country in South America. Brighter days for racing may come are almost sure to come but In tho meantime the great breeding industry is suffering a blow from which It will be hard to recover. The loss which the crippling of the breeding in dustry means to this country is strikingly brought out by the report of recent thoroughbred sales in the Argentine Republic, where 1SS horses brought a total of ,2G4.333, an average of 0.i3G each. Not only that, but twelve colts by Cyllenc, the great English horse, sold for S3,SS5, an average of over 5,310 each. With such a demand for good stock it is little wonder that James B. Haggln and other American breeders have sought new fields at the expense of this country. New York Tribune.
