SAGER ONLY WINNING FAVORITE. More Rain at Norfolk and Course of Jamestown Jockey Club Is Now Deep and Heavy. Norfolk, Va.. November 9. Barney Schreibers Bannockburn Miss Marion colt, Sager, saved the backers of favorites at the Norfolk track this afternoon from a Waterloo. He was the only first choice that led his field as the finishing mark was passed. The heavy track probably was responsible for the form upsets. A steady downpour during the past twenty hours has made the going deep and it took a sturdy horse to run through it successfully. Surprises came with the running of the first three races and then the public got a break. While Capsize and Sunlike were not favorites, still they did not lack for friends, and it is doubtful if the 1 ers profited by their victories. Capsize beat a couple of shifty horses in Martin W. Littleton and. Suffragist. The former was well supported u the strength of a good race a few days previously, but he failed to run up to expectations. Despite disagreeable weather, the attendance was large and speculation brisk. The meeting here is ou a much more solid basis than any of its prcdeces sors. The only drawback Is the failure of horsemen to enter more liberally, but the bad state of the go lng is in a measure responsible for this. The colors of Capt. E. B. Cassatt were carried to victory in the opening dash for two-year-olds by Be. The latter showed himself to be a good mud runner by taking- tho lead soon after the start and drawing away five or six lengths in front of his company. At the finish jockey Mclntyre had him well in hand. Chilton Squaw, winner of the second race, chauged hands after her victory. The race was a selling affair and Chilton Squaw was entered to be sold for 00. Sam Louis bid 5400 when she was offered and her owner refused to protect her. Chilton Squaw was purchased from the Barbarity Stable a few weeks ago and has been improving. She showed a game performance today, running head and head with Gold Cai throughout tho last three furlongs and outgaming the latter In the final drive. Madrigalian, which finished third to Husky Lad and Bob It. yesterday, came out of his race a lame horse. He spread a foot during the race" and it is doubtful if he will face the barrier again within a month or two. William Garth has returned to Norfolk from Ben-ning. Ho reports that tho shipment of his yearlings to his farm at Charlottesville was delayed on account of his inability to secure cars. Mr. Garth thinks that he has the making of some really good racers among the band of youngsters that he broke this fall, a couple by The Commoner being extrcruelj promising. II. D. Brown was a visitor at -the Jamestown Jockey Clubs track this afternoon. He is on his waysouth and will go to Jacksonville before leaving for Cuba. The date for the opening of the Al-mandares track has been set for December 15. The stake blanks of tho Charleston Fair and Racing Association arrived this morning and were distributed among the horsemen by Fred W. Ger-hardy, who probably will act as secretary for the new association. Many of the horsemen here have already announced their intentions of participating in the meeting.
