MARLBORO PURSES TO BE INCREASED. Washington, D. C, November 9. Although the weather was not at all inviting today, as a drizzling rain fell most of tho time, the usual crowd made the journey to the Marlboro track, and they were well repaid, as the best sport of the meeting was enjoyed, even though the track was heavy in consequence of another downpour last night. Scratches were more numerous than usual, but still fields of good size faced the starter, and close finishes resulted. The opening race, a dash for two-year-olds, was marked by the best finish of the meeting. Apiaster won by a head from Honock, which was the same distance before Billy Hancock, with Drexel Hill only another half length away. Apiaster was the only successful choice. The meeting at Marlboro has been such a success that the management announced today that they intend to let the horsemen benefit by it and when the program book appears for next week it will show an increase in all the purses. Joseph McLennan, who is one of the judges at tho Norfolk track, was among those at the course to day. His mission here was to try and secure horses for the Norfolk meeting, but Mr. McLennan was not aware of the fact that the meeting was to be extended another week. So his trip here was not a successfjil one. Charles J. Lynch, one of those chiefly interested in the Columbia, S. C, meeting, was also a visitor today, no -will remain for a few days and then proceed to New York to tile his application with the Jockey Club for dates. Jockey Stcinhardt was suspended for two days by starter Milton for disobedience at the post.
