EQUALS A NORFOLK RECORD PRINCE AHMED RUNS THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILE IN 1:12 IN WINNING HANDICAP. Closo Finishes Feature Days Sport at Track of Jamestown Jockey Club Half the Card Goe3 to Favorites Man with Halter Aotive. Norfolk, Va., November 23. H. G. Bedwells good old racer, Prince Ahmed, showed his heels to a band of smart sprinters in the Berkley Handicap, the feature race of the program provided by the Jamestown Jockey Club this afternoon. Prince Ahmed carried top weight and was ridden by Forehand. In the early running he was reserved behind the terrific pace set by Helen Barbee and Black Chief, but rounding the far turn ho moved up on the outside with a startling burst of speed and In the stretch ho drew away Into a sixlengths lead. The three-quarters of a mile was run in 1:12, which equals the track record. Besides Prince Ahmed, Cu Bon and Limpet scored as favorites. Well balanced fields went to the post in a majority of the races and in three of them the winners were under hard drives to win by small margins. In two of the races the outcome remained in doubt until the official placing was displayed. Cu Bon scored his third successive victory when he galloped homo an easy winner in the fifth race. The race was a selling affair and owner II. Burttschell was again forced to stand a raise to retain the horse. The race was one of those known as a 00 top and bottom affair and Cu Bon was advanced to 05 bv W. N. Adrians, owner of Perthshire, which finished second. In the fourth race Cuttyhunk beat Harvey F a nose on tho post. The finish was so close that the judges could have given the purse to either of the first three. West Point probably would have won but for bearing out in the last sixteenth, narvey F, which was placed second, saved ground all the way and finished next to the inner rail. It was a close- thing between Limpet and Clem Bcachey in the sixth race. The former was a well backed favorite, but was forced to overcome mucn bad racing luck to win. When the break came Turner pulled up, and on the backstretch he was forced to take his mount back. The rider made amends for this in tho stretch, where he outrode Diggins when it came to the finish. Again in this instance the judges could have given the purse to either of the first two horses. Hugh Penny was in receipt of a letter from jockey Jimmy Reid which brought the information that the lad had left France and sailed for India, where ho will ride during the winter months. Reid expects to land a good contract next season in France, where he is popular. Raleigh P. D. came out of the third race a lame horse. On the backstretch turn near the half mile post, he was thrown against the inner fence and injured his stifle. It developed that tho injuries of Fair Miss in the closing race yesterday were of the same nature. Both racers will be on tho shelf for a few weeks. In the opening race the two-year-old Tahoma was crowded against the fence and jockey Byrne suffered a crushed foot. The lad was forced to cancel his remaining engagements for the afternoon. Jake Marklein, from Cincinnati, and R. T. Mc-Keever, from New York, were among the visitors today. Both probably will remain for the rest of the meeting. The different railroads running out of Norfolk for Columbia have arranged specials to leave on the closing night of the meeting. A majority of the owners racing here have about decided to go to Columbia. Included in the list are H. G. Bedwell, J. W. Flynn, J. P. Mayberry, Sam Louis, W. A. Burttschell, S. W. Streett, Archie Zimmer, Hugh Penny, J. L. Holland, W. Gerst, L. Le Blond. E. H. Garrison. G. R. Bryson, P. H. Jones. C. L. Mack. J. U. -Strode, L. M. Stackhouse, R. S. Brush and Willie Martin. The purses will be 50 and 00, with a 00 handicap on the opening day.
