J JAREZ PATRONAGE IS GOOD ATTENDANCE IS FIFTY PER CENT BETTER. THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS. Meadow Wins Handicap Featuro with Consummates Ease, and Arasee, Favorite, Finishes Third Stakes Opened for Two-Year-olds of 1912. EI Paso, Tex., December 11. Meadow, carrying top weight of 125 pounds, won the mile handicap at Juarez yesterday afternoon with consummate ease. Leading practically all the way, she was never really extended and passed the judges with a two-lengths advantage over Azo. Arasee, was third. Grolh just let Meadow canter along head and head with Arasee, the latter under restraint, for tin; lirst half mile. On the last turn she passed into the lead, and her iloeklike stride never varied from there to the finishing line. While not the favorite, that place of honor being credited to Arasee. her victory was an extremely popular one. as she is the idol of the El Paso race-going public. Arasee might have been second had Carter let him go along more briskly in the early running. When challenged by Azo lifty yards from the finish, he gave it up, and was beaten half a length for second money. The attendance was large and showed the growing popularity of the sport. General Manager M. J. Winn stated today that the attendance lias been fully lifty per cent, better this season than last. The racing was exceptionally good and was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd. From a financial standpoint the present meeting will undoubtedly eclipse those of former seasons, for. while both previous meetings were conducted at a big loss to the clubs stockholders, the present meeting will in nil probability show a balance on the rignt side of the ledger. Present conditions are encouraging to M. J. Winn and bis associates, who are trying to establish racing in Mexico on a paying basis, and the hope is expressed by the otlicials that the club will make a little money this season. Certain it is that this is the year the track as a winter racing center should prove a success if it is ever going to be a paying venture. In former years it had the formidable opjiosltiuu of Oakland. This year it has a clear field in the west anil in consequence a larger number of horsemen and raeo-f goers have been attracted than ever lcfoTe. The great majority of these have come here from the far west and lutermouutain country, while the representation from the eastern states this year is smaller than in former years. Manager Winn has kept faith with the race-goers, and has made the ring an open one this season. On the opening day nine liookmakers drew in and apparently had all the business they could handle. At present George Rose, Roy Olfutt. Joe Schreiber. W. li. Ynnke. 1. Ham and F. J. Grefcr comprise the list of layers, and these men, it is expected, will continue to post odds for some time to come. The club, contrary to the custom of former years, is not operating any dollar books this year. This throws all the business to the big books, who will take dollar bets as well as the larger ones. The look in the twenty-live cent Held Is still being ojicrated by the club, and Is in ehasge of Jack Mack-well, who managed it last year. J. II. Adams, who made a faulty claim for Mar-sand a few days ago, made no mistakes on Saturday and secured the lilly for 25 out of the tifth race. She had only been purchased that morning by J. W. Ixvy, a prominent business man ot HI Iaso. Mr. Levy will be remembered by those racing a decade or so ago as the owner of Clara Bauer and other good horses. W. Ii. Stantield reached here today from California with a pair of promising yearling by F. W. ltarr. The Jockey Club Juarez has issued blanks for three two-year-old stakes for foals of 1910, which are to lv run in the spring. The entries for these stakes will close Saturday. December 23.
