CONSPIRACY IS DISCOVERED JUDGE CHARLES F. PRICE LEARNS OF PLANS FOR FRAUD AT JUAREZ. Jockeys and Others Implicated Admit Their Guilt and Scheme Is Promptly Nipped in the Bud. El Paso, Tex.. December 20. The return of bright and warm weather attracted the largest attendance in ten days at the Juarez course. Closer cinched his claim of superiority over the rest of the two-year-olds here by winning the handicap with consummate ease from Vanir and Lady Rankin. The race proved little more than a canter for him and he led from start to finish, winning with great ease. Anent the recent rulings against jockeys J. Howard, A. Wrispeu and A. Walsh, Judge Charles F. Price gave out the following information today: "Jockey J. Howard was the ringleader in a conspiracy to form a sort of jockey trust and had a party whose name at present has been withheld for obvious reasons to bet large sums of money in eastern poolrooms on horses designated by Howard. Wrispen aud Walsh readily concurred with Howards views and the plan was shortly to be put into effect. Other boys were also interviewed by Howard, but declined to enter into the -scheme." How ard had in his possession a letter from the eastern man which he showed to the other riders. The stewards received information as to the proposition and when Wrispen and Walsh were called to account, they confessed to their part in it. Howard also later on admitted the whole proposition, which was to have been put through shortly. They, the jockeys, were to select handicaps and other races with small fields in which to shoo in the horse designated. A man named N. Murphy was also implicated in the affair as a go-between, and he was arrested and thrown iuto jail at Juarez. He also confessed." Fortunately, Judge Price nipped the whole thins in the bud. Quinlan and Higel claimed The Hague out of the third race for 1911.sh25.
