AMERICAN TURFMEN IN FRANCE New York April 22 Robert H Davis whose col ¬ ors were carried with success over American courses a few seasons back writes interestingly from Paris as follows followsIt It is surprising to note tbe number of familiar faces one meets at the race course at Auteui dozens of men and women we had frequently seen at Sheepshead Bay Belmont Park Aqueduct and nu ¬ merous other popular American race courses Among the wellknown racing people encountered at Auteuil last Sunday were Theodore W Myers former Comp ¬ troller of Xew York City who maintains a large racing establishment under the management of the redoubtable Tod Sloan Frank La Montague whose stable is trained and managed by the young Amer ¬ ican trainer Preston Burch of Washington D C Mayor Van Wyck former mayor of New York who is an almost dally attendant at the different courses and dozens of other familiar Americans whose names I cant recall at the present time timeAmong Among the oldtime trainers I met at the course was John S Campbell familiarly known as Johnnie Campbell formerly of Waicott Campbell of Cast ¬ away and Cassius fame Campbell has had consid ¬ erable success he tells me training for Mr Pfizer but says that should the situation ever change In the United States so that racing can be conducted again on the same high plane that it was previous t the enactment of the fanatical laws doing away with the grand sport he would be glad to go back jo the states and resume operations on the same large thereM scale that he did when last racing there M also saw Fred Calhoun an American who has nan SOUK measure of success in managing the horses V Yauk Gould who has a beautiful establishment KH KHL L a rsllrt d nce outside of Paris and who her IlerfccUJ satisfied with the racing conditions conditionsrorlmHv rorlmHv niV iV whom Americans will recall ns n oubl mkn H1 HV5 most successful handlers of thor Kr It Vlvhh ti4oUte1 1 Statos is located at Maisons lKloiiVii n JfmHLad ° r horfics in nctual training FrlSM3udorraurOUS ° W11Crs En American Americanof of thoroushbrods lielonging J hTw idenerof Philadlihla who expects to race on rather an exton cxten cxtenI sue scale from now on I also met tins old American trainer Frank Cab who formerly trained for the Dwyer brother Mo whon they were in the zenith of their success son sonI I made a trip to Maisons Laffitte to view tho horses sent over by Charles Kohler the wealthv American business man who was forced to send alKtut what remained of the best horses in America over here to France so that they could find a place to race The lot includes Fitz Herbert Novelty ZMIS Puggins Dinna Ken and others and they nix in charge of the master hand of Samuel C Hildreth their former owner From what I have seen of the horses racing hereabouts I am reasonably certain that Mr Kolilcr will meet with a fair share of siu ctss with bis stable here
