MEW YORK TRACKS TO EEHAIN CLOSED August Bclmont Gives Quietus to Reports to the Contrary in Eastern Circulation New York April 22 The local race tracks will not open llicJr sales this summer That means no racing at the big race courses Racing can be held at the tracks if the directors desire to hold meet ¬ ings for there Is 110 law apilnst the sport in this ftate But under existing conditions the directors do not wish to offer meetings while the socalled directors liability law is on the statute books The only racing here this year will be confined to the hunt and steeplechase clubs clubsIn In these words August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club set at rest the rumors that have been afloat of late regarding the racing situation Ever sinco April 15 the day on which racing may legally start in this state there have been reports that the Bclmont Park track the Empire City course and thu Saratoga Association would hold short meetings That meetingsThat Mr Bclmont finds time despite his many business interests to pay attention to the blooded horse of America shows what a true lover of the thoroughbred be Is Ever since local racing went out of vogue because of the adverse legislation few men here have continued to take au interest in the thoroughbred the hunter or the horse suitable for the remount service of the army Not so with the chairman of the Jockey Club however What about the future of the turf Mr Belmont the chances of racing nest season for instance instanceI I dont wish to discuss that subject he re ¬ plied In the first place it Is too far away sec ¬ ondly I havent the slightest idea Better wait for nest year to arrive arriveHow How about Saratoga Will it liave a racing meeting this season There have been reports to that effect effectI I havent the slightest idea what the Saratoga Kacing Association intends to do R T Wilson is the only man able to talk to you on that matter Personally I dont believe there will be racing in Saratoga but I have no reason to answer yes or no to the question But as far as the local tracks are concerned the gates will remain closed closedWill Will you send your string of race horses now in America to England er France to race raceNo No they will remain In this country and take part in the race meetings in America I have not decided yet whether I will send them to race on the Canadian tracks
