DERBY REGARDED AS AN OPEN RACE Sentiment By No Means Confined to One Horse Something of Prominent Candidates Louisville Ky April 27 With the thirtyeighth consecutive Kentucky Derby only two weeks away there is good reason to tolicvc that fen possibly twelve of the best threeyearolds in America will strive for the richest prize of the turf in thi5 country countryAs As the time for the running of the race draws near the fact stands forth that it is as uncertain an event as was this great race just twentyseven years ago when Capt J T Williams Joe Cotton defeated Bersau the horned horse the noted Ten Booker the brilliant Troubadour and the famous Favor FavorThe The Kentucky Derby this spring is similar in many respects to the season in which it was won by Joe Cotton Maj T C McDowells The Man ¬ ager a colt of rare promise is thought by his ad ¬ mirers to be a certain Derby winner It Is claimed that the only race lost by him last season was over a heavy course and upon other occasions when he raced in going to his faucy he won off as his rider pleased His record as a twoyearold does look alluring as four wins in five starts sounds well The Manager has been trained In preparation for the Derby at Douglas Park Up to the time of his shipment last Wednesday to Lexington he had met every requirement of his owner and trainer trainerMany Many fancy the chances of The Manager in the Derby as he comes from a family which has pro ¬ duced three Kentucky Derby winners in Riley Azra and Ben Brush but the rank aud file of the turf are swearing allegiance to H C Hallenbecks 10000 colt Worth which has wintered at Aikeu S C and received his preparation where the late J W Rogers fitted Gnu Fire and Irish Lad for their mem ¬ orable campaigns In 1003 These racers were taken north from the same place where Worth has beeu quartered Gun Fire captured the Metropolitan Handicap in the Broooklyn Handicap Irish Lad won with Gun Fire secoud secoudThe The twoyearold record of Worth is as sparkling as that of any colt that has been trained for the Kentucky Derby since it was first run in 1875 Worth won ten races in thirteen starts He was the largest moneywinning horse in 1911 on the American turf with 10045 to his credit Worth has blood worthy of a Derby favorite in his veins since he comes from the family which produced the good threeyearold Cash Day which at that age won the Oakwood Handicap at Washington Park Chicago iu 1804 defeating that day the celebrated Ray S for which the late millionaire Charles F Flelschmanu of Cincinnati paid 12rJOO 12rJOOThe The third dam of Worth is by Ozark a threeyear old that once defeated Aristides the first Kentucky Derby winner Ozark was a sou of Pat Malloy and out of Sunny South the dam of Harry OFallon which sired tho celebrated threeyearold Terra Cotta The threeyearolds In the family of Worth were stayersSonada all sturdy and hardy stayers Sonada in sniteof his defeats at Charleston and as a result of his brilliant work at Lexington last Wednesday has again come into prominence as a dangerous Derby factor The Charleston contingent believe that Sonadas races on the South Carolina track do not reflect his true form Sonada raced only four times as a twoyearold He won twice aud was out of the money once On form he shows up well There is no objection whatever to his breeding His dam was a daughter of the great Wadsworth one of the most brilliant threeyearolds the western turf has known Wadsworths racem the 20000 Garfield Park Derby was as wonderful as any run by a threeyearold in this country On a track almost kneedeep in mud Wadsworth was last threequarters of a mile from the finish A dozen horses were in front of him some of them stagger iug With unflinching gaincness Wadsworth over ¬ came his disadvantage and in the closipg strides brought the great Yo Tambien to the hardest kind of a drive to beat him Oldtime horsemen even now talk of Wadsworths exhibition that day During dayDuring the past week at the Downs a dark horse has developed as a menace to the Derby cracks This reference is to Henderson Hogans Guarauola which on Wednesday worked the bust mile any Derby candidate with the exception of Sonada has shown so far Guaranola covered the distance in 141 He was by no means all out Guaranola was given his early preparation for the Kentucky Derby at Juarez Mex where he won his last start He has improved a great deal since his arrival at the Downs and there are several smart horsemen who would not be surprised should he win Guaranola is by the sire of Governor Gray Garry Herrmann lie Is a halfbrother of that good mnre The Lady Rohcsia their dam being The Governess by imported Gleneld The next dam is Penny by Jerome Edger Penny was the dam of Gouverhieur and Prince Karl winners of many races From Penny bredTrainer on Guaranola is entirely English bred Trainer William Hurley who has C J Caseys Cracker Box at Churchill Downs says that Cracker Box will surely be a starter in the Derby This colt is second to none in the big race when it coiws to pedigree He is a brother of the good marc Crossover being by Octagon Lucy Cross by the un ¬ beaten St Simon Octagon is the sire of Beldame Lucy Cross one of the highestpriced Englishbred mares ever imported into this country was pur ¬ chased by August Belmont at a cost of 18500 at auction auctionLocal Local followers of the turf would have no regret should George J Loug capture the Derby this spring with his muchimproved colt Free Lance Every work lias shown that this son of Alvescot is constantly improving Free Lance is out of Merry Heart by imported Sir Modred He is a half brother to Lndy Toddiugton and his second dam is Blithesome by Onondaga she being oiit of the famous mare Beatitude Mr Long has figured ex ¬ tensively in the history of the Kentucky Derby He has won it with Azra and Sir Huon HuonWheelwright Wheelwright is regarded by the followers of the stable of J N Camden as another that should be reckoned with in the Derby He Is trained by J O Keene who some years since while training In Russia won all the Dcrbys in the domain of the Czar with the Russianbred colt Irish Lad Wheel ¬ wright is a son of Mazagan and My Beauty BeautyThe The two most likely maidens in the Derby are PatruchO and Chief Lindsey Both of these colts are training on at the Down It is by no means improbable postR that one or both will go to the post R F Carman is to try out Sherlock Holmes early next week at the Downs to determine his real caliber He Is a son of Indexible and was a winner last year It was reported last winter that Sher ¬ lock Holmes had died but it develops that it was ills stable companion Dr Watson WatsonThe The two fillies in the race looked upon as possible starters are Flamma owned by T R Condran and Ursula Emma owned by the Louisville turfman Louis P Doerhoefer Both of these fillies raced well as twoyearolds but the unbroken failures of their sex in the Derby may keep their owners from starting them No filly has won the Kentucky KentuckyW W F Schulte has four yearlings at Argyle Farm this season three being fillies and one a colt Th hB BeHc7 ScmpronillsGIIdluK KJ the dam of Glid GlidFormer Former jockey John Gardner who rode for for Eugene Leigh in vcars now France arrived to in W vW II Baker came from Char eAontodav with v four horses They are Feather Duster Ella Limpet and Husky Lad Brvson uryson
