OAKS RACING IN KENTUCKY Louisville Ky April 27 There is a race sched ¬ uled as the feature for next Wednesday at Lexington which in some way has been generally overlooked and still it is of importance It is the revival of the famous Ashland Oaks for threeyearold lillies and will have a bearing on the Kentucky Oaks at the Downs on the last day of the coming spring meeting meeting3The 3The Ashland Oaks was discontinued in the spring of 1897 It was von hi 189G by the famous inare Myrtle Darkness with Bracegirdle the dam of T C McDowells crack Derby candidate The Manager second Myrtle Harkness was beaten that year in the Kentucky Oaks by the famous Soulilc which won also the Latonia Oaks that season seasonThe The Ashland Oaks was established In 1S79 four years after the inaugural Kentucky Oaks was run The Lexington race was first won by Peru which later became the dam of the famous Dry Monopole winner of the first Brooklyn Handicap Liahtunah won the Kentucky Oaks that season Peru running unplaced The next winner of the Ashland Oaks was Lavacca and she also failed in the Louisville race Longitude winning the Kentucky Oaks that season In 1SS1 the noted Lucy May won the Ash ¬ land Oaks beating those two good fillies Lizzie S and Lida Stanhope and Lucy May was the first double winner of the Ashland and Kentucky Oaks In 1SS2 Issie won the Lexington race with the noted Belle of Runnymede second and that season the Louisville CreelVera event was won by Katie Creel Vera then owned by R C Pate who afterwards became noted in the first attempt to introduce rac ¬ ing at Mexico City won both the Ashland Oaks and the Kentucky Oaks and the late B G Thomas won the race in 1884 with Hiflight and this is the year in which Modesty the only filly that ever won the American Derby was winner of the Kentucky Oaks Ed Corrigan won the Lexington race in 1SS5 with Ida Hope and he also captured the Kentucky Oaks that season with Iila Hopes stable companion Lizzie Dwyer In 1SSO Pure Rye and Mary Ann ran a dead heat in the Ashland Oaks and the stake was divided They met again in the Kentucky Oaks Pure Rye winning and Mary Ann running unplaced In 1SS7 Florimore won both the Kentucky and the Ashland Oaks This was the season the Latonia Oaks was Inaugurated and went to P B Harpers Unite In 1SSS Hypocrite won the Ashland Oaks nnd the Kentucky Oaks fell that season to Ten Penny and Mr Harper won the Latouia Oaks again with Lavinia Belle In 18S9 Jewel Ban owned by WaJ B G Thomas won both the Ashland and Ken ¬ tucky Oaks and Retrieve which belonged to Labold Bros owners of Montrosc the Kentucky Derby winner of 1887 won the Latouia race In 1890 Camilla won the Ashland Oaks and the great English Lady won the Kentucky and Latonia races being the first filly to win this double event In 1891 Ethel owned by E Corrigan won the Ashland Oaks but was beaten in the Kentucky Oaks by Miss Hawkins The Latonia race that year fell to the famous Ida Pickwick In 1S92 the Ashland Oaks was won by Uiiadilla while Miss Dixie won the Kentucky Oaks and Lake Breeze the Latonia Oaks In ISO Monrovia trained by the noted Brown Dick who developed the Kentucky Derby winner Ben Brush won both the Ashland and Kentucky Oaks while Dare Vela took the Latonia race In 1894 Queenlike II the dam of T C McDowells famous mare Kings Daughter won the Ashland Oaks but was beaten in the Kentucky Oaks by George J Longs Sclika while the Latonia race that season was won by Orinda The Ashland Oaks of 1895 was vou by Ilessie and that season Valadora won the Kentucky Oaks and Leaflet captured the Latonia race The Latonia Oaks was discontinued in 1909 but the Kentucky Oaks has enjoyed an unbroken history and is as old as the Kentucky Derby Ex cept the Alabama Stakes Saratoga first run in 1872 the Ladies Stakes Inaugurated in 1SGS and the Hunter Stakes first run in 1SG9 the Kentucky Oaks has a longer history than any filly race in the annals of American racing It bids fair now to go on anl on and in the long years to conic may some day have a history of as many years as marks the great English race at Epsom Downs for which it is named The Kpsom Oaks was inaugurated iu 1779 and is still the filly feature of the British turf
