KENTUCKY E1CING BEGINS LEXINGTON MEETING IS OPENED UNDER CON ¬ DITIONS THAT PROMISE WELL The Unbeaten Hawthorn Continues His Victorious Career Mockler Wins Stake Eace Christmas ChristmasStar Star Takes Hace for TwoYearOld Fillies Lexington Ky April 27 Racing in Kentucky for the season of 1912 was ushered in today under con ¬ ditions that augur favorably for the sport The inclement weather of yesterday was succeeded this morning by bright sunshine and was a potent fac ¬ tor in causing the presence of a generous atten ¬ dance Track conditions were bad but improved steadily as the afternoon progressed and if no more rain falls the track will be in normal condition for Mondays racing racingTrack Track conditions considered todays sport was spirited and exciting though it brought with it many unexpected happenings and jolted those witli a liking for short priced starters In this respect Caugh Hill was probably the most serious offender but his failure was not altogether due to himself Carroll Shilling his rider having his first mount in many months made an amateurish showing that contributed largely to the horses failure Interest failureInterest in the meeting of Hawthorn and Rostnr tiurn in the second race and Christinas Star anil Inqnieta in the fifth was keen among the horsemen There seemed to be a sort of sectional feeling Hawthorn and Inquieta have been campaigned at Juarez this winter and are the outstanding cracks of each sex Christmas Star is undisputedly thu best filly developed at Charleston Kosturtium while rated a good colt was by no means the topnotcher there but was thought able to give Hawthorn i stubborn battle The latter made a show of the Charleston colt and won as his rider pleased Christmas Star was the handiest winner of the after ¬ noon noonThe The Phoenix Hotel Spring Handicap was a good contest with Mockler the winner over Any Port The disappointment of the race was Princess Callaway which throughoutThe showed to poor advantage throughout The crack Worth was on the track between the races and was cantered in company with several of his stable mates Worth attracted a good deal of attention and appears in line health but some of the horsemen are somewhat cliary as to bis being suflici ently advanced in training to stand a contest such as the Kentucky Derby will entail Other Derbr eligibles on the course during the day included Du val Sonada The Manager and Guarauola The Manager cantered a mile in 150 and Guarauola was worked a mile in 10173 10173George George Odom stated today that he wonld have to let up on Sumptuous until fall on account of an injury sustained in her last start startJohn John Gritfiu II the veteran campaigner will possibly not be raced again as be appeared in a bad way after the running of the first race in which he broke down downSpeculation Speculation today was considerably in excess of last seasons opening day and established a record for an owning day here Nearly every prominent horseman hereabouts was at the course General courseGeneral Manager Matt J Winn stated today that he was undecided as to the continuation of tho mutnel combination betting at Churchill Downs and will probably abolish it itC C 11 Ellison arrived today from West Baden where he has been sojourning since the close of tht Charleston meeting meetingH H C Hallenbeck was an arrival from New York Harry YorkHarry Morrissey was today offered an engagement to do the starting at Oklahoma City for the meeting beginning thdre in June Mr Morrissey will accept the offer conditionally that he can fill his dates at Rutte Salt Lake and Anaconda Mr Morrisseys starting today was good and he wasted little time at the post In any of the races racesA A member of the Kentucky State Racing Commis ¬ sion said tonight that the running of the first Ken ¬ tucky Endurance Stakes at Churchill Downs last fall the winner of which was the threeyearold Messenger Boy developed that there is something wrong with the scale of weights for four miles and that the commission has decided to make a readjust ¬ ment and would be glad to have the opinions of all horsemen in writing that it may get the benefit of a consensus of opinion It appears that under the present scale a threeyearold in October has consid ¬ erably the advantage of the older horses in the allotment At thit time of the year a threeyear old is really as good as he will ever be afterward it is held
