GRANDLY CONTESTED RACE AT SANDOAVN Prince Palatine and Stedfast in a Tremendous Finish for the EOOCO Eclipse Stakes London Kng July 20 A vast assemblage at Sundown Turk yesterday enjoyed the pleasure of witnessing i race of the kind that furnishes food tor discussion for months afterwards This was xvlen the two crack fouryearolds of 101 Prince Palatine and Stedfast ranged alongside each other when altout a quarter of a mile from the end of the race for the 0000 Eclipse Stakes and racing head ind head to the winning line linished sit close to ¬ gether that the majority of the spectators proclaimed it a dead heat The judge saw it differently and gave the race to Prince Palatine by a matter of a few inches Quite as exbilerating as tlie tremendous exertions of the two noble am inals was the masterly exhibition of superb jockey ship on the part of ONeill on Prince Palatine and Malier on Stedfast StedfastStanding Standing as it does as one of the most fashion ¬ able functions of the season only line weather was wanted to make Kclipse day one of the most brilliant in its history but tlie bright conditions for which the Sundown meetings are almost proverbial were wanting and the sport was carried through to the accompaniment of drizzling rain The breakdown affected the attendance to some extent but the patronage of his majesty lent distinction to an occasion that will long be remembered in connec ¬ tion with the exciting finish for the tenthousand pounder between Prince Palatine and Stedfast StedfastThough Though doubts have at various times been ex ¬ pressed as to the utility or advisability of the ten thoiisandpounder and one or two of them it must be confessed had a comparatively short existence the Kelipse Stakes which set the example more than a quarter of a century ago holds its own bravely ami remains the central attraction of the chief of the meetings held at Sandown Park And it can he claimed that very few horses outside the first class have been the recipients of the valuable prize while it has offered occasion for many battles royal between thoroughbreds looming large in the public rye Last year saw the deadheat between popular rivals in Lcmberg and Neil Gow and yesterday the coming together of Stedfast Prince Palatine and Tagalie formed the most interesting feature of the weeks racing while the contest possessed a mildly international flavor from the presence in the lield of La Boheme II sent over from France to emulate the feat of Le Just Icier which took the spoils there in 1S05 1S05Prince Prince Palatine as usual began slowly yester ¬ day For a quarter of a mile or so he and King William were at the tailend of the field at which time Tagalie was making the pace from La Boaenie II John Ainendall and Stedfast It was a slow pace because the time occupied in covering tlie ten furlongs was 212 which was over four seconds more than Ard Patrick took when he won Tagalie continued in front until more than halfway round the bend She was then passed by Stedfast Ap ¬ parently Mahers idea was to get in front at that IKtint in order that he might secure the rails berth entering the straight He was however thwarted for the time being because Reiff persuaded Tagalie to put on a spurt and she was not more than half a length behind the favorite when they turned their htads towards the goal Before another furious had been covered Tagalie was hopelessly beaten so much so that Reiff mercifully eased her and per ¬ mitted her to canter up the hill at her leisure leisureFor For a few moments Stedfast was left in solitary state It looked as though he would for the rest of the journey have matters pretty much bis own way Nor did the outlook occasion much anxiety to his backers when presently Prince Palatine hard driven by ONeill took second place All the way round the bend Mr Pilklngtons horse had gradually drawn nearer to the leaders He had been given every opportunity of settling down to his work It will be remembered that when in the race for the Coronation Cup he started ten lengths behind the slowest beginner among bis opponents he was bustled along all the way up the hill and actually made up the lost ground in the first half mile He thus made his big effort at the beginning instead of at the end of the race and even so was beaten by less than a length Yesterday ONeill adopted the right tactics tacticsBut But witli only a half mile to go Prince Palatine had a lot to do At that stage ho must have been a length and a half or two lengths behind Stedfast The latter was progressing in comfortable fashion while the challenger was running at full pressure Gradually the gap between the two lessened At the distance Prince Palatine was not more than a half length behind but it still looked good odds on Stedfast for Maher had not yet moved on him It appeared as though the favorites jockey was under the impression that his horse had something in hand wherewith to settle his rival at the finish On they came Prince Palatine still gaining an inch or two with every stride When their beads were almost level fifty yards from home Malier set to work in grim earnest But those who expected to see Sted ¬ fast regain the lead were astonished to find that Prince Palatine fairly held him These were tense moments The two horses as if locked together pounded along to the winning post Two strides from the post they were dead level and after they bad passed the judge there was a silence that could be felt until No 2 was signalled Then we knew that Prince Palatine had avenged his defeat at Ep ¬ som and the magnificence of bis victory was ac ¬ knowledge with cheers loud and long longIt It was indeed a splendid performance on tbc part of the Tullybred horse Never has a more courage ¬ ous effort than bis been seen on a race course It was sheer pluck and persistence that enabled him to wear down Stedfast during that long and tiring run up the Sandown hill hillNo No sooner had tbe winners number bebn hoisted than the bookmakers raised a scare by offering to bet on a prospective objection Happily It was nothing more than a scare It would have been a thousand pities if the memory of so stirring a battle had been stained by a protest requiring the inter ¬ vention of the stewards Lord Derby took the de ¬ feat of his horse in the true sporting spirit and so all was well This is the first defeat Stedfast has suffered since ho finished second to Sunstar in the Derby last year He had in the meantime won twelve races That he is a good horse a very good horse cannot be questioned At the Earls Court Tournament last week the master of ceremonies declared that tho Duke of Marlborough had tilted well but that his opponent had tilted better So we may say that Stedfast yesterday ran a great horse but that Prince Palatine ran a better one Twas a matter of only two or three inches but they put 4307 into the pocket of Mr Pilking ton instead of into that of Lord Derby And in ¬ cidentally it may be pointed out that the chance of Chaucer heading the list of winning sires at the end of the season Is now materially lessened Had Stedfast won yesterday Cyllenos supremacy would have been seriously threatened threatenedWith With regard to Tagalie a word or two must suffice She was admittedly fit she was handled by the jockey who rode her to victory in the Derby and who adopted the tactics that proved so success ¬ ful at Epsom she was the first beaten We are therefore almost forced to one of two conclusions Either she was lucky to win tho Derby or she has quite lost the form she showed in that race We had better wait a little longer before deciding which of these alternatives is tbe true one oneIn In the Great Kingston Plate which followed tho running of the Eclipse Stakes II
