LONG SHOTS TO THE FORE HORSES QUOTED AT LIBERAL ODDS ACCOUNT FOR HALF THE CARD AT JUAREZ. Odelia Beats a Useful Lot at Odds of 20 to 1— Gladys Y. Wins at First Asking for W, E. Applegate — Two Favorites Score. El Paso. Tex.. January 14. — Balmy weather helped to attract to Juarez today on© of the largest racing crowds of the season. The card was accounted for by three long shots, two favorites and a second Choice. Odelia. from the stable of Benson and Pierce won the third race from a fairlv good band of sprinters at the long odds of 20 to 1. Jladvs Y.. starting for the lirst time, carried the colors of W. E. Applegate to victory in the opening dash Bad show.-d herself to be a promising filly. She was outpaced for the first eighth by several others, but obtained the lead a hundred yards from the Unisn. and withstood Superls challange handily. Sepul reda was the 01 her winner at good odds. Orbed Lad. heavily backed by the public, took the final race of the day by leading his field from stair lo finish. .1. P. Atkin will sell his entire stable in the paddock next Saturday. He has been heavily interested in several California basel»all clubs and owns the controlling stock in the Sacramento club. Jockey J. Murphy, the colored rider who was suspended by the Juarez stewards two years ago, has been reinstated. Murphy was suspended for several bad rides, notably one on Harrigan. which was beat en by Spohn, owned by W. T. Anderson. Harrigan was the favorite at 7 to 10. A large sum was net. on Spohn in the hantlbooks. A few days later Harrigan heat a much better opposition, including Polls, Injury and others, running a mile In 1:37-75 and reducing the track record. Murphy was under contract to Dr. I. E. Clark at the time of his nun-pension. J.ckey Gargan was suspended for five days by starter Cassidy. J. J. Troxlers mare Miss Korn. which was taken ill quite suddenly yesterday, died last night. The peculiar symptoms exhibited induced the belief that she had been poisoned, in consequence of which the board of stewards ordered the track veterinary. Dr. CUB. to hold a post-mortem examination and report his finding. Dr. Cann reported today that after a careful analysis he could find no traces of poisoning, but that the mare had succumber to a violent attack of spinal meningitis. John Lewis joined the bookmakers today. The layers all report a large volume of monev in sight at all times. The majority of the bookmakers here ate losers to a considerable extent.
