AN EMBARRASSING NOMINATION. A great sensation was recently canned in racing circles on the Rand by the action of the Johannesburg Turf Club in accepting an entry for the Summer I Christ mas 1 meeting from a native. From an exchange of December 99 we gather that the native is a well known Basulo chief named NTsleug. whose horse. Mow. wis nominated for several races, but. -ays our contemporary, "it is felt by many members of ibe club that a precedent will hi created which may lead to very gnat difficulties in the future. Hitherto the policy of the Turf Club ha- been -xtremely strict, colored trainers for horses running under their rules being •barred. also colored jockeys. Natives and Indians have been allowed to run horses in Natal anil at the Cope, but this practice has been tabooed in the Transvaal, and il i- fell thai a meat mistake has been made in departing from the policy enforced for so many years. Moreover, it is point, -,| out that while the nomination of a native has been accepted, the Turf Club will not allow a white woman who owns horses lo enter them at their meetings. A number of mem bers of the Turf Club have openly declared their intent ion of resigning if the new policy is con tinned." —London Sportsman.
