ABSURD, BUT ITS THE LAW. The New York Sun publishes the following com mimical ion from one of its Yonkers readers: "The legislature of 101*1 passed a law that owners or directors of a race course should be arrested, lined and Imprisoned if a bet was made on the grounds Of the same. The other Bight the police raided an apartment house on a charge of gambling within the premises. Now. is not the owner of that apartment house liable to arrest, line and imprison in-at- If not. why not? It is a parallel case. Ol" i mrse no one believes the owner had any knowledge of the gambling, nor could a race course owner know of every liet hat is made. But there is the ib surdity of it. punishing a man for something of which he is ignorant."
