: 1 : 1 LAUREL TRACK IS FLOODED CARD, SMALL TO BEGIN "WITH, IS GREATLY DEPLETED BY SCRATCHES. Pometto Bleu Is Returned Easy Winner in Two-Year-OId Handicap, Contested by Only Four Starters The Rump Scores by a Nose. Baltimore. Aid., October 2. It looks as if Laurel is doomed for a spell of bad weather. Rain came down in torrents at the course again this afternoon. Hooding tin; track and making the going a sea of mud and slush. The result was that the fields, none too large at first, were materially reduced by withdrawals, and what was meant for a feature, a handicap for two-year-olds, at live aud a half furlongs, was reduced to a four-horse affair, with two of them coupled as the Belmont entry. The race resulted in the easiest sort of a victory for Pometto Bleu, which won in a canter after coming from the rear In the stretcli. Flitaway, a fast filly, appeared unable to run in the going and ait but little- figure in the running. The closest sort of a finish came with the running of the third race, a dasli of one mile. In which the Held was made up of three starters. John Reardou and The Rump raced like a team for half a mile. Then The Rump drew away, only to quit in making the turn into the homestretch, where John Reardon loomed up a likely winner. The latter weakened in the final furlong, while The Rump came again and in a desperate drive outgamed John Reardon and beat him a nose. It was a close thing between the two and there was some doubt as to which had won until the official placing was displayed. Flviug Yankee, the one to two favorite for the opening dasli, would probably have been beaten had young MeTaggart been able to keep Magazine straight. The latter seemed to have a winning lead in entering the homestretch, but went wide In making the turn and at the end kept bearing out. He was only beaten a length and a half by-Flying Yankee, which ran close to the rail for the entire trip. Jockey Teaban has signed to ride for W. R. Mi-zell and will accompany the stable to Charleston. T. J. Healev. acting for R. T. Wilson, has sold the two-year-old Suwanee to James Fitzsiinmons. He has taken over the Star Shoot colt Supreme that A. G. Weston was racing in Canada. Al Rolirback, general manager or the Connaught Park Jockey Club, was a visitor at Laurel this afternoon. He will remain a few days before returning to Canada. Gun Cotton came out of her race of yesterday lame. Hill Stream, which led in the early stages of todays fourth race pulled up lame. Robert Walden will campaign a largo string next season. He has twenty-four yearlings at his farm in Middleburgli, Md.. most of them the get ot Bryn Alawr and Dalhousie. Several are extra good lookers and are said to have worked fast. The two-year-old Penniless, after being worked tills morning, was taken with an attack of paralysis. The filly is in a bad way and may not race again. H. I. Wilson, president of the Butte Jockey Club, was among todays visitors and stated that the last season of racing was the most succesful ever held at the Montana course.
