TRACERY DEFEATED BY CANTILEVER t London, Eng., October 2. At Newmarket today the race for the ?50,000 Jockey Club Stakes, for three-year-olds and upwards, at a mile and three-quarters, had an unexpected termination when Lord Hnrewoods three-year-old bay colt Cantilever, by Bridge of Canny Lighthead, 113 pounds, finished first, witli A. Belmonts .four-yenr-old brown colt Tracery. 147 muih1s. second and Mr. Fairies four-year-old bay colt Alepim, 137 pounds, third. There was nothing in Cantilevers racing career to suggest his ability to defeat such a horse as Tracery under any circumstances. He had a breeding allowance of six pounds, while under the conditions of the race Tracery took up its extreme penalty of sixteen pounds for having won the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. Previously Cantilever had only won a single race. This was when, as a two-year-old, he won the Alington Plate at the Newmarket Second October meeting last year. He had started in four races this year and finished second to Long Set in the March Stakes at Newmarket Mav 1, second to Bachelors AAedding in "A Plate" at Newmarket May 21, unplaced to Louvois, Masindi and Flippant in the Prince of AVales Stakes at Ascot June 17, and second to Light Brigade in the Durham County Produce Plate at Stockton August 21. Iu this race only the two started and, carrying 133 pounds to 124 on Cantilever, Light Brigade gave him nine pounds and an easy two lengths beating."
