FINAL WEEK IN KENTUCKY LATONIA MEETING BEGINS ITS LAST LAP UNDER MORE AUSPICIOUS CONDITIONS. Course in Good Shape, Notwithstanding Two Weeks of Rain Cousin Puss Beats Coy Lad by Narrow Margin in Handicap. Cincinnati, O., November 3. Latonia began this afternoon its final week of racing under conditions that promise well for the sport during the remaining days of the season. Excepting that it was a trifle cloudy, the weather was ideal compared with what has gone before. The weather sharps predict bright sunshine for the remainder of the week. Track Superintendent Keegau had a big force at work on the course yesterday and this morning, and their labors were rewarded considerably, for the going was uniform and firm. With no further moisture, it should be at its best for tomorrows racing. As a result of the improved track and weather conditions, the racing was the best witnessed during the meeting and was immensely enjoyed by a surprisingly large Monday crowd. The speculation almost reached holiday proportions and liberal prices ruled against the various winners. Three favorites, two second choices and a well supported outsider accounted for the purses. The feature offering, a handicap at one mile and seventy yards, furnished a sensatioual finish in which Cousin Puss got up to beat Coy Lad and Flabbergast after she had been a distant trailer and had lost considerable ground by a wide stretch turn. The Oots lilly ran in her best form this afternoon. She was benefited by the fast early pace that Benauet, Morristown and Coy Lad forced, which left them somewhat exhausted when the crucial test came. The sprint race which followed the handicap, developed a stirring struggle In the stretch between Theresa Gill and James MacManns Presumption. The latter won by a small margin. Theresa Gill was lest, but was forced to lose much grouud In the last three-sixteenths when Presumption bore out. " Flex was another odds-on favorite that managed to land a purse. E. It. Bradleys Bracktown Belle found it easy to win the second and Turners good ride enabled Garneau to win in the closing dash. Judge Charles F. Price was forced to absent himself from the track this afternoon on account of sickness. It is expected that he will officiate tomorrow. Col. Milton Young and John Hachnieister served as the stewards this afternoon. Jockeys C. Turner and J. Henry carried oft the riding honors, each with a couple of victories. It was the first time that Turner had ridden a winner other thau on A. Turneys representatives in a long time. Gallaher Bros, will refrain from racing this winter and will send their horses at the close of the Latonia meeting to Lexington to go into winter quarters. J. Schreiber sold Jim Basey today to Mrs. M. R. Fanner, and Florence Roberts, another in his establishment, will run in Johu Lowes interest during the winter at Juarez. FAigene Elrod received a letter today from the management of the far northwestern racing, where sixty-tive days of racing will be conducted next summer over the various tracks in that section of tlie country They announced that the mutuels will be installed on the circuit and were desirous of having .Mr. Elrod take charge of the betting rings. As the dates conflict with the Kentucky season Mr. Elrod will be unable to accept the offer. "Dad" Yeager was among todays visitors at the course. J. W. Pugh, formerly owner of the good racer. Fonsoluca, is the democratic nominee for sheriff of Kenton County and his election tomorrow seems to be a certainty. John B. Dillon, who has been serving as county clerk. Is also up for re-election on the Democratic, ticket and his success is likewise assured. Ike Gottlieb, a well-known Cincinnati bookmaker and diamond merchant, died unexpectedly last night after a brief illness lasting only two days. The deceased was well known and liked among the racing fraternity. Jockey W. W. Taylor was suspended for the rest of the meeting by starter Cassidy for disobedience at the post. Francis J. Pons will ship nine horses, including Judge Wright. John Furlong, Armor and Jack Kellogg to Charleston to race. He will dispose of Font, Capitan Bravo. Snowilakc, Dicks Pet, Luxurious, Edna Liska and Miss Waters at auction Thursday. Hodge, the crack two-year-old owned by Kay Spcnce, has been entered for the Palmetto Park Derby and is expected to fill his engagement in it after participating in the racing at Juarez. Considerable interest is being manifested in the outcome of the Latonia Cup, two and a quarter miles, to be run on the closing day. Arrangements are under way to take care of the largest crowd of the season. H. R. Brandt has cancelled his reservation for accommodations at Juarez and probably will not race his stable during the coming winter. George J. Long has arranged with J. C. Ferris to take quite a string of his horses to Juarez to race, including the three-year-old filly Madelle. several two-year-olds and some yearlings from the Bash-ford Manor establishment. J. P. Ross will send Uncle Hart to Juarez In charge of P. T. Clilnn. Willie Applegate is here on his way from Laurol to Juarez, where he will book during the winter." Mose Goldblatt has added Bonne Chance to the Jefferson Livingston stable by purchase from J. O. Keene. The Livingston horses will leave for Juarez tomorrow night Before shipping the Camden stable to winter quarters, J. O. Keene will sell Christophine, Darbi-shire and Toynbee. Dr. C. Cann has gelded OReilly for James Mac-Manus and that two-year-old will be out of training until next spring. Richard Crowhurst. formerly a well-known jockey, died Sunday at his fathers home In Newport, Ky. aged 32. Crowhurst rode with particular success over the Chicago tracks when racing was in its heyday here. The funeral will take place this afternoon. Crowhurst was unmarried.
